That's fair enough. Not everybody shares the same tastes, after all, and it'll calm down for a bit after December and the release and you'll get a break until the next one comes out.

trying to read this is causing me pain, and I usually don't even have a problem with the terrible font color choice secrets

Woooow you don't like a thing. Good for you. You must be so unique and put-upon, poor baby.

Can you really not talk about this without people getting...angry or upset or offended or whatever?

I mean I don't really care about LOTR and its related things...nobody's ever gotten angry at me for that

I'm pretty much the only person I know who didn't see all three movies and people haven't gotten on me for it yet. (I saw the first one, didn't like it that much, and that was it. Books were better but did have boring parts.)

That said, there are some fans who always want a Good Explanation of why you don't like a thing, so I can totally believe it happens to the OP.

I don't get it when people complain they can't say they don't like something, who cares? Just don't be an arse about it and most people will respect it.

My best friend loves everything Tolkien, I couldn't care less about any of the movies and books. We still get along quite well.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I used to hang out on a Tolkien forum where some posters would question the intelligence of anybody who didn't like Tolkien (or even liked the movies more than the books). One comment that really stuck with me is somebody saying they wouldn't be friends with somebody if they didn't like Tolkien. I recently went back to said forum for some Hobbit discussion and was quickly reminded why I left in the first place.

Anyway, it's possible the OP ran into somebody like that.

So, there's this thing called tumblr savior...

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 12:11 am (UTC)(link)

Weird.

I only see stuff about the Hobbit here.

Actually, now that you mention it, I've noticed the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I saw a commercial on TV last night and I think that was the first time I'd seen one. I really haven't seen much media hype at all. If you're hearing too much about it, it has to be because you're choosing to hang out with people who want to talk about it all the time.

Eh. Couldn't get through the Hobbit and never even attempted LOTR, but I do enjoy the LOTR movies quite a bit. I'm looking forward to this despite the fact I'm not so much of a fan of Tolkien's books.

I don't know why so many people are freaking out over this. A person can watch Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and not the other movies. A person can read Catching Fire and not the other books. A person can watch Nu!Who and not Classic!Who. It doesn't mean they're a bad fan; it just means the other bits of canon doesn't interest them or are more difficult to find.

I cried tears of joy watching the first trailer (yes, I know I'm sad), but I don't bring the movie up constantly to people who aren't interested (or at all, actually). If you don't like it you should be able to say so and people should respect your opinion. If they don't...find better people to hang out with, I guess.

I agree with everyone's suggestion to tumblr savior it (if you even have a tumblr account, and use it on a computer).

(Sorry for the text-heavy/lack-of-editing. It's a bit of a rant that I really needed to get off my chest. Thanks.)

I am tired of hearing about The Hobbit (really, really tired) already. Have been for months. The collective squee on (facebook, pinterest, LJ, twitter, etc.) and off (step-sister, cousin, friends, best friends...) the interwebs has me the opposite of interested (I don't care about Lord of the Rings beyond the cinematography (they are works of art, I freely admit) anyway and Tolkien bored the crap out of me (yes, I read them in high school and agin whn my step-sister started squeeing over the movies)). S! B: It's not worth the amount (both times I read them) of defending my opinion I will have to do anywhere (face-to-face, facebook, LJ, pinterest, twitter (damn you interconectivity!)) I might express it.

I'm sure at some point you've squeed to someone about something that they didn't particularly care about. Be nice and return the favor. :) The hype'll die down after the first movie comes out, anyways.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Don't feel bad. I'm not particularly interested either. I do like the commercials though, because they're pretty and I like hearing Martin Freeman's voice.

Why does everyone think this is going to be good? It's tripe! 3 movies to tell the story of the shortest book.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
My take on the Hobbit movies is that it could go either way. A hell of a lot of stuff was going on outside Bilbo's view over the course of the story -- Gandalf going here there and everywhere, meeting of the White Council, attacking Dol Guldur, all the parts of the Battle of Five Armies Bilbo was knocked out for, elf politics, dwarf politics, Laketown politics, and a hundred other things. There's definitely enough story there for two movies, maybe three, just not spelled out in detail by Tolkein.

So, it could be quite good. It could also be quite bad. I'm withholding judgment.

I'm confident it will be very pretty.

So how about you. You know. Not participate in Hobbit discussions? Sorry, but people are going to like things you don't like. Things you don't like re going to be popular, even! And you have to just suck it up because people aren't going to stop enjoying things they enjoy just because you don't.

That said, if you have a friend group that literally will not talk about anything else, that's shitty. Sit them down and (politely and respectfully) tell them you feel left out. If they're good friends they should understand and try to include you more.
