Can you really not talk about this without people getting...angry or upset or offended or whatever?

I mean I don't really care about LOTR and its related things...nobody's ever gotten angry at me for that

I'm pretty much the only person I know who didn't see all three movies and people haven't gotten on me for it yet. (I saw the first one, didn't like it that much, and that was it. Books were better but did have boring parts.)

That said, there are some fans who always want a Good Explanation of why you don't like a thing, so I can totally believe it happens to the OP.

I've seen all three, but to be honest, I really don't like the first one, so I can totally see why some people watch it and go, "Dead God, I am not sitting through another six hours of this..."

That said, I tried reading the books two different times and I am pretty sure my brain melted. Tolkien was an amazing world builder but that man wandered off on tangents and NEVER fucking came back. :|

And yeah I've never gotten shit on for not thinking that LOTR is the be all and end all of the fantasy genre...

God, yes! I think he got distracted by all the cultures and languages he was creating and kept on forgetting about the actual story.

A friend of mine has only seen the first one too. She commented, "They do a lot of running, don't they?" Which made me laugh.

I don't think anyone's ever given her a hard time for not watching the others or for not liking the first. People have different tastes in films and books.

I've only seen part of the first movie. I've gotten a lot of "omg why not????? You need to see them!!!!11" but not a lot of outright bashing.

It's a shame that there are people out there who try to police others' tastes like that :/

I don't get it when people complain they can't say they don't like something, who cares? Just don't be an arse about it and most people will respect it.

My best friend loves everything Tolkien, I couldn't care less about any of the movies and books. We still get along quite well.

I used to hang out on a Tolkien forum where some posters would question the intelligence of anybody who didn't like Tolkien (or even liked the movies more than the books). One comment that really stuck with me is somebody saying they wouldn't be friends with somebody if they didn't like Tolkien. I recently went back to said forum for some Hobbit discussion and was quickly reminded why I left in the first place.

Anyway, it's possible the OP ran into somebody like that.
