If you have the internet connection to make this secret, you're more privileged than about 99.9% of people and should shut your mouth.

...because only 0.1% of the world's population has an Internet connection?

Wow, the Internet business is doing far worse than I thought it was!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Not to mention that considering the number of homeless who hang around urban public libraries, being online really means jackshit these days.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-28 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Not just urban public libraries - and not just for the internet connection. Urban and rural public libraries are warm and cool places for homeless and struggling folks in extreme weather, they're charging locations when they can be and others are without power after disasters, and the internet in the library isn't just used for "surfing the net" or creating silly games and secrets. They're a spot where people can connect to online courses where they can get out of crappy situations, get a better job, get any job, get help getting funding or aid etc........

And they are the first thing the actually over privileged twats in the government cut when they're needed the most by the most people: when the economy is bad.

That argument stopped being relevant in, like, 2007 or something.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
More like 1997.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
lol, you know that over 34% of the world has internet access right (as in ~2.4 billion people, spread over every continent)?

or are you one of those annoying people who think that everyone outside of North America and Europe live in tiny mud huts and have to fend off the wild beasts at night or something?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
lmao, yes I hate it when someone acts like not a single person in Africa or what the hell ever has ever seen a goddamn computer. Over 150 million people there have internet access! A lot of them text and probably tweet about the same vapid shit that we do. Being able to get on the internet honestly does nothing to indicate your privilege in this day and age

hyperbole: n. Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally, unless one is on the internet, apparently.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
backpedal faster

you were obviously insinuating that having internet connection gave you more privilege than most people and that's hardly true

...that's not what I was trying to explain. The 99.9% was a poorly executed exaggeration, but yes, having a stable internet connection is pretty unusual. Actually, I shouldn't say "a stable internet connection" because that was never what I meant. My first comment was "the internet connection," because it has to be an internet connection to a personal computer. I haven't been able to find a single public computer that would allow me to save images, edit them, then save them again. Now, personal computers are expensive. Monthly internet is expensive. And (this is true for me at least) my family members in China have access to ONE computer with those components. I'm talking upwards of fifty...

To add to your point, many countries have internal firewalls that spy on people or not allow people to go on certain sites. Even if the 34% have internet access, a good number of them aren't accessing it the way you and I can.

I don't know what the hell this is, but I just spent the last few minutes laughing myself sick

This shit is going to give me nightmares. D:

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Even the titillating tongue?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't work either. 0.1%, whether hyperbolic or literal, implies a very tiny fraction. 34% and counting is not a very tiny fraction.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 11:35 am (UTC)(link)

I recently saw an essay by a Nigerian writer slamming the "first-world problems" meme for much the same reason. Not to mention that the term itself was considered horribly outdated when I did GCSE geography over a decade ago.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Plus, because you have privileges doesn't mean your life is 100% perfect all the time and that your problems aren't worth consideration.
Yes, some people will always have it worse than you somewhere in the world. But your problems matter too.
