I think everybody in a small fandom can relate to this. On one hand, big fandoms can be nuts and being part of a small fandom feels kinda special. On the other hand, big fandoms usually have a bunch of amazing fanwork.

I have nothing intelligent to say but: VNV Nation, yesssss.

...In all seriousness, though, industrial fits a lot sci-fi stuff, don't know if those are your fandoms.

[identity profile] tafkarfanfic.livejournal.com 2012-11-24 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I've only ever seen one sci fi show vid set to industrial music, and that was years ago. The vid itself was poorly edited (in that the person apparently just decided to play part of an episode and run the music over the actual soundtrack, rather than doing any editing), but the song (Praise the Fallen, by VNV Nation) was such a good fit for the source material that it made the vid way better than it should have been. I would KILL to have someone vid BSG, Stargate, Farscape, Firefly, or Falling Skies to industrial, just to name a few fandoms.

Heck, I think there's even some industrial songs that Doctor Who would go with. Imagine vidding Nine to Wiseblood's Pedal to the Metal! Lyrics like "I'm a one man wrecking gang" and "Two's company, but I'm a crowd" would be a perfect fit. (Too obscure?)

I understand, for artistic reasons, why New Who has so little Gallifrey/Time War footage (suggestion makes it more epic than spelling it out!), but some part of me does selfishly wish more of it existed so I could vid it to VNV Nation's "Honour."

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Aren't you just a winner. Maybe you shouldn't try pretending that listening to industrial that was super ~obscure~ over a decade ago makes you cool?

Because seriously, it doesn't. It's no more original or awesome than a lot of that "more mainstream" music that you so enthusiastically diss.

Get over yourself.

My, weren't you quick to take that personally for no particular reason, just because OP said they THOUGHT other stuff sounded "ugly."

Here's some Midol.
Now go take a nap and chill out.

Don't recognize the bands, but assuming you're into anime, have you checked out AMV.org's catalog? You can search by bands. I'm pretty sure you can make an AMV out of pretty much any song with the right series and a little creativity.

And if you can't, well, maybe you should be more of an anime snob to make your "snobby" music tastes.

That's what I was thinking. Searching at AMV.org by band is a good idea, might help OP see what can work and get their creativity going.

Fuck yeah, VNV. (Actually, I really wish there were more AMVs to their stuff... some stuff could work just beautifully, I think.)

I simply can't understand the concept of a music "snob". You enjoy music that you enjoy regardless of whoever else might also like it.

The only place where snobbery fits in is if a big part of your musical appreciation lies not in the enjoyment of music but in the bragging to others about your enjoyment of music -- which seems like a game where the only result is that you end up listening to a lot of music you don't like and feeling guilty because your brain is the way it is.

You like a lot of unpopular music, that's fine -- no shame in it. No back pats, either. I'd say the same thing if you liked a lot of popular music.

Pick the songs for your AMV that you like. Or pick music that you know other people will, even if it isn't your fav, if what you want is a lot of clicks. You don't need to tie yourself in knots over some silly rules that don't exist.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-25 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't imagine being a music snob. Just think of all the music you could be missing because you* won't give it a chance because it doesn't measure up to your standards.

I love this post. Enjoying a genre doesn't meant you must enjoy *all* of that genre, or *only* that genre.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-25 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
I have music/vidding snobbery going the other way, actually - as a musical theater fan/sometime Phantom fan, I cannot bring myself to listen to/watch vids for characters I love with Phantom songs that fit really well when the vidder takes the song from the POTO movie soundtrack, because yeah, that soundtrack was kind of shit. There are so many better recordings out there, with vocalists who can actually *hit the notes* ... At the same time, the POTO songs fit really, really well in some of my fandoms, so it's always frustating to watch as the umpteenth vid to bad Gerald Butler singing comes out.

Hah, your taste in music seems a bit like mine.

VNV would work for most fandoms, I think. I saw a Trigun vid set to Solitary that was pretty much perfect.

As a bit of a rivethead and an anime fan, I might disagree. The lyrical content of Covenant or VNV Nation, talking about honor and love and so forth could make for a kick-ass high energy AMV for a magical girl series, perhaps.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-27 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Nice to know another VNV Nation fan. There are not many VNV Nation songs put to AMV's, but I will self-pimp and mention the one that I did with Saviour to Berserk, so it can work well.
