Oh boy, this movie fueled my then-depression.

Wouldn't you be destroyed over wondering whether or not they made it? D:

You wouldn't believe how much I was crying at that point of the movie.

I can understand what you're saying. That would have been a hugely impacting ending.

But I'm glad they didn't. I don't know if I could have stood it if it ended there.

SAME. man did that movie go on and on and on :/

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, kind of like how I think Wall-E and the Iron Giant would have been more effective if they didn't add on a "happy ending" to show the hero safe after their apparent self-sacrifice. But you're still playing to an audience of children.

man, I know the movie got pretty dark, but it is a children's movie...... that would be some seriously morbid shit to just end it there
do you take pleasure in the suffering of others

Every time this comes up I remember at the time I was thinking "they wouldn't...would they? OH GOD please DON'T!" but for a split second I almost felt they really would do that.

And seeing as the first film was out when I was nine, it would've got me right in the childhood, as they say.

Kirk/Spock portmanteau

Oh, no! I started to think about the Kirk/Spock one and now its Kock

I understand the appeal and the tragedy of such a scenario, but I don't think many parents would appreciate their children being scarred for life like that ;)

Every time I see a TS secret I have to wonder if I'm the only person on the planet who watched the first one, went, "Meh..." and never watched the others/gave it a second thought.

While I can see why, the impact it would have on children would be too tremendous, and possibly result in a lot of crap being fired around the Net.

[identity profile] antialiasis.livejournal.com 2012-11-25 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
But then we wouldn't have had the ending where Andy plays with them again, which was the best part of the movie as far as I'm concerned. So yeah, no. I'm all for tragedy, but no.

...fuck, now I'm getting teary-eyed just thinking about it.

(Also, while again I'm all for tragedy, if it had simply been left at that scene, it would have been a narratively unsatisfying ending.)

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-11-25 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Man I was so wrapped up in that moment I forgot it was a kids movie and wouldn't end that way. When Buzz and Woody are staring at each othrr and realiing it's over? I remember getting lightheaded and then this weird gleeful acceptance washed over me and I almost couldn't understand what was going on when they were saved.

I should clarify I was at a drive-in theatre that allowed BYOB and wasted by this scene so I was a little loopy. Fun though. I cried a lot. A lot. I was given a pillowcase to wipe my face.

It couldn't possibly have depressed me more than the fairytale about The Steadfast Tin Soldier that I've known since childhood, so why not.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-25 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
I was twenty when I first saw this movie, and I don't think I could have handled that, but I can see why you would want that, OP. It would be thought-provoking, but since it was the end of a trilogy, they needed happier closure (as someone already mentioned). If this were a standalone film, though, that ending might have worked.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-25 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
I would have enjoyed this movie more if I didn't feel like it was deliberately punching me in the feelings. To clarify: I admire well-done moments of tragedy in a movie, I don't like being told "YOU SHOULD FEEL SAD NOW".
