You say she's not involved with online fandom at all? Then I doubt she sees it as a TITANIC DEATH STRUGGLE, THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE! and if she has a negative reaction, it will be mild and not impact the friendship.

If you meant to say she wasn't involved in online fandom until BBC Sherlock, but now she is, then yeah, proceed with caution. People can get over-invested in their first fandom. It's normal, but they may react to any perceived threat or slight with extreme prejudice. Tread lightly until the ardor has cooled.

I guess I'm just worried because so many slash-loving Sherlock fan's reaction was that kneejerk "they made Watson a girl? NOOOOO!" one, and I would hate to have that discussion/argument with anybody in real life. I'm not afraid of our friendship dissolving because of this, that'd be silly, I'm just worried about a potentially annoying argument resulting.

She's not involved with the fandom itself, just fangirls among her own friend circles, but she is super-passionate. /shrug

I've never watched Sherlock BBC but I've been a huge fan of the ACD canon and the Granada TV series for years and here's the simple truth, Elementary sucks.

I WANTED to like it, I liked the idea, like Liu, love Miller and it's terrible.

Crappy writing, crappy plots and let's not even get started on the fact that Holmes is always wrong, well, at least a couple of times an episode. I don't know who this bloke is but he's not Sherlock.

If they'd just used different names, it would be adequate, I suppose, but as a version of the Holmes stories? Utter unmitigated crap.

*shrug* I doubt very much it will break up the friendship. Especially if you start both watching other versions of Holmes as well and talking about the ins and outs of AUs.

Pretending something that isn't true gets tiring really quickly and isn't worth the effort in this case. Tell her. If nothing else you can say that you need a dose of something Holmesian on a regular basis until the BBC does a new series because you've overdosed on Reichenangst!

The weirdest thing about the outrage, to me, is that Elementary looks nothing like Sherlock. Going by format, aesthetics, and timing, it's more of a spiritual successor to House than anything.

I have a friend who likes BBC Sherlock and she made a face when I said I was digging Elementary so I dropped it. I certainly haven't brought up how much I dislike BBC Sherlock or the people making it with her.

So yeah, I get you. I'm also seriously wishing I got a dollar for every time someone said 'I tried but it's just not BBC Sherlock,' (really, no shit, it's not supposed to be) 'But they made Watson a girl!' (they picked the best person who auditioned for the role and that happened to be Lucy Liu) 'it's not Sherlock, just a police procedural,' (it's an adaptation and a different take on the canon, of course it's not exactly the same as any previous one) and so on. I'd be rich within days.

Of course it's true, there's only one definitive Sherlock Holmes.

She may not like it, but would that be such a big deal? Friends can't have the same opinions about everything, and maybe a discussion about why you like the show and she doesn't could be both fun and informative?

I tend to watch all Sherlock Holmes adaptations I can get hold of, and while I didn't like Elementary I did watch it first. I haven't seen the great wank war people are talking about. Seems like a limited number of idiots on tumblr? I have a tumblr with which I follow some Sherlock blogs, and I haven't even seen a mention of Elementary.

I'm sorry to hear that, OP. I hope your friendship doesn't fall apart from two television shows. =( Here's to hoping your friendship is stronger than that.

BTW I don't understand the extreme levels of feelings people have between Sherlock and Elementary. I like both shows, and I understand it's all in a person's taste so if one show is liked more than another I'm not going to hold it against anyone, but the levels of wank between these two shows is a bit ridiculous. I guess I'll never understand fandom.

I like both. I adored BBC Sherlock and I'm enjoying Elementary and they're completely different. I was a tad wary of Elementary but I gave it a go and I like it.

Your secret seems to imply that condemning Elementary after having seen it is acceptable, however I don't think the logic of 'based on actual episodes, this is a lazy excuse for a Sherlock Holmes adaptation' will hold much sway with its fans
