(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)If you meant to say she wasn't involved in online fandom until BBC Sherlock, but now she is, then yeah, proceed with caution. People can get over-invested in their first fandom. It's normal, but they may react to any perceived threat or slight with extreme prejudice. Tread lightly until the ardor has cooled.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)GRAB ALL THOSE FEELINGS AND SQUEEZE THEM INTO A TIGHT BALL AND BURY THEM DEEP DEEP DOWN
YOUR FRIEND WILL VISIT YOU AND BE ALL LIKE
"Oh, [OP], what's wrong? You are trembling!"
AND THEN YOU'LL BE ALL LIKE
"N-no. I'm fine." HERE YOU WILL FORCE A SMILE FOR YOUR FRIEND'S SAKE. "Really," YOU WILL STAMMER. "Hey, let's go do [FUN ACTIVITY YOU AND YOUR FRIEND ENJOY]."
YOUR FRIEND WILL LOOK UNCONVINCED, AND YOU WILL TREMBLE SOME MORE, BEGGING HER WITH YOUR MIND TO PLEASE JUST LET IT GO. PLEASE. OH, PLEASE.
SHE WILL DECIDE TO LET IT GO FOR NOW, BUT WILL DEFINITELY TALK ABOUT IT LATER. FOR YOUR SAKE, SHE WILL TRY TO GO WITH YOUR DISTRACTION, IN THE HOPES THAT IT WILL CHEER YOU UP.
BUT SHE WILL KNOW. SHE WILL KNOW.
IT'LL BE LITTLE THINGS AT FIRST, LIKE A COOL FANART YOU PRINTED AND LEFT LYING AROUND, FORGOTTEN.
A LITTLE SLIP OF THE TONGUE ABOUT LUCY LIU'S KICKASS PERFORMANCE IN THAT RECENT SHOW THAT--OH, NOTHING, NOTHING.
THEN ANOTHER TIME, WHEN YOU FORGOT TO LOG OUT OF YOUR TUMBLR, LEFT TO GO GET A DRINK FOR YOUR FRIEND WHO JUST CAME OVER TO VISIT YOU, AND SHE WILL SEE THE GIFS YOU HAVE REBLOGGED.
SHE WILL SAY NOTHING WHEN YOU COME IN, FOR HER BACK WILL STILL BE TURNED TO THE DOOR.
YOU WILL STOP IN YOUR TRACKS, SEE THE COMPUTER SCREEN, SEE HER, UNABLE TO SEE HER FACE, AND THEN DROP THE DRINK.
SLOWLY, AS IF TIME ITSELF WERE STRETCHING ITSELF OUT, THE GLASS WILL FALL, CENTIMETER BY CENTIMETER, INCH BY INCH, WITH PRECIOUS DROPLETS FLOATING, BEING LEFT BEHIND BY THE UNCARING FORCE OF GRAVITY, BUT FREE, SO SWEETLY FREE AND FLYING FOR THAT PRECIOUS MOMENT.
BUT THE MOMENT WILL BE SHATTERED BY THE CRASH OF A GLASS SHATTERING ON IMPACT AGAINST THE FLOOR.
YOUR FRIEND WILL TURN, STARTLED AT THE SOUND, AND WHEN YOUR GAZES CONNECT, THAT WILL BE IT.
SHE KNOWS.
YOU KNOW THAT SHE KNOWS.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT, THEN, OP?
WHAT?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)I've never watched Sherlock BBC but I've been a huge fan of the ACD canon and the Granada TV series for years and here's the simple truth, Elementary sucks.
I WANTED to like it, I liked the idea, like Liu, love Miller and it's terrible.
Crappy writing, crappy plots and let's not even get started on the fact that Holmes is always wrong, well, at least a couple of times an episode. I don't know who this bloke is but he's not Sherlock.
If they'd just used different names, it would be adequate, I suppose, but as a version of the Holmes stories? Utter unmitigated crap.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)Pretending something that isn't true gets tiring really quickly and isn't worth the effort in this case. Tell her. If nothing else you can say that you need a dose of something Holmesian on a regular basis until the BBC does a new series because you've overdosed on Reichenangst!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-25 12:12 am (UTC)(link)The weirdest thing about the outrage, to me, is that Elementary looks nothing like Sherlock. Going by format, aesthetics, and timing, it's more of a spiritual successor to House than anything.

So yeah, I get you. I'm also seriously wishing I got a dollar for every time someone said 'I tried but it's just not BBC Sherlock,' (really, no shit, it's not supposed to be) 'But they made Watson a girl!' (they picked the best person who auditioned for the role and that happened to be Lucy Liu) 'it's not Sherlock, just a police procedural,' (it's an adaptation and a different take on the canon, of course it's not exactly the same as any previous one) and so on. I'd be rich within days.
Of course it's true, there's only one definitive Sherlock Holmes.

I tend to watch all Sherlock Holmes adaptations I can get hold of, and while I didn't like Elementary I did watch it first. I haven't seen the great wank war people are talking about. Seems like a limited number of idiots on tumblr? I have a tumblr with which I follow some Sherlock blogs, and I haven't even seen a mention of Elementary.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-25 03:30 am (UTC)(link)BTW I don't understand the extreme levels of feelings people have between Sherlock and Elementary. I like both shows, and I understand it's all in a person's taste so if one show is liked more than another I'm not going to hold it against anyone, but the levels of wank between these two shows is a bit ridiculous. I guess I'll never understand fandom.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-26 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)My BBC Sherlock fan friends were all 'who the fuck would like this shit?' And I'm all...not saying 'me' because I don't want their condemnation.
I blog it under another fandom name not connected to my main one.
