What is SJW?

Social Justice Warrior.

Generally, instead of being conscientious about social justice and change, like most people would assume, they're more likely big bullies who use SJ as a "good" excuse to attack people.

As opposed to somebody who's into social justice (like say, that anon a while back who helped the homeless find sustainable housing), somebody who spends less time trying to change what they see as an injustice in the world and more time yelling at others how they perpetuate the injustice of the world on the internet. In other words, doing nothing to contribute to what they claim to stand for, because their real goal is to "get even" usually with the world because it's given them shit and they never figured out how to deal with that except ganging up and giving shit to a third party.

As opposed to people who actually *care* about social justice issue - SJW tends to refer either to people who do more harm than good to the cause, who don't really care about it and are just trying to make themselves look good, and/or who take their "online activism" so to speak waaay too far and just act like huge dicks.

It's a term that is arbitrarily applied to anyone that the person using the word thinks is too angry/aggressive/unapologetic about things like racism/sexism/transphobia/homophobia. It is sometimes applied justifiably (see, for example, people like riley on tumblr - people that spend most of their time being angry and hateful and looking for the slightest excuse to rage at and tear down people for the tiniest mistakes to make themselves feel morally superior).

It is also fairly often applied to people that speak up about issues of social justice and object to sexist/racist/transphobic/homophobic trends in media and society, however they are expressed. This is because most people get uncomfortable when someone points out problems in the media they consume or the society they live in, or in their behaviour. So they respond in a dismissive or derisive manner to any criticisms, and try to make the person who brings up the criticisms feel stupid or silly for caring about those issues. When that person gets angry because they refuse to listen or care, the person who is dismissing them gets to say they're being a silly, hysterical and overreacting SJW.

TL;DR it's a term that is occassionally applied to people that deserve the label, but more often used to shut down discussion of things tha make people uncomfortable.
