weird internet happenstances

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
hey fs sup. Do you ever follow someone on tumblr and then end up immediately regretting it? I have! I just recently followed someone because they followed me, which I don't usually do but have been again lately. They seemed relatively normal but to be honest I'm pretty much totally confused by everything they post. I feel like they must be constantly high or something. Also the day I followed them they made a post saying that their mum shot their dad? And then didn't mention it again and returned to making loads of incoherent text posts. It was kind of surreal. And mildly concerning..
Everything became more surreal when I started talking to this other person I follow on tumblr who then proceeded to tell me about how they were in a relationship with their sister, and had previously had one with their cousin as well.
It was a strange day.
You don't really need to know this information, but it was all kind of strange so I wanted to tell someone. But on anon. So you're welcome for that.

Has anyone else had similar strange experiences? The first one isn't really a strange experience as such, but I'm just kind of confused by this person in general..

sorry i just wasn't really sure what you meant by it! my reply sounded kind of snarky though. it's all good, carry on

Because the alternative is very <:(

That's...possibly very serious. If I may ask, why did you follow them ( the parental violence person) in the first place?

Usually if someone floods my dash AND doesn't tag things I drop them within a day.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
i just followed them because they followed me, and we had some similar interests. didn't really think it through too much.
It did seem pretty serious, but they haven't mentioned it again, so I think it must have turned out.. well, not horribly. I don't really want to inquire about it though, because I feel like they'd just tell me to piss off or would say they weren't being serious about it. =\

I have an online friend I'm trying to distance myself from (even though I've actually met them IRL and got along fine in general) because they seem to feed on gossip about other online friends. Even when it's people I don't know, it makes me pretty uncomfortable, knowing that her and her roommate basically amuse themselves by digging through fandom friends' lj/twitters/tumblrs and making fun of them.. I'm 80% sure she doesn't do that shit on my posts, but what if she does?

I created a special "everybody but her" friends filter on my LJ/DW and went back to edit super-personal entries so she couldn't access them. This girl is just looking for drama, I swear..

Wow...that's definitely concerning. =/ Have you talked to her about it? (I get that that may or may not be a good option, I don't really know much about your situation)

(Sorry if it's weird that I responded to this but not OP...that was just...wow, I didn't know what to say)

Nah, though I think one of our mutual online friends know that she & roomie have discussed shit about her. It's kind of ..Mean Girls-y?

All I know is that it's made me trust her so much less. I used to talk about everything and anything with her, now I just stick to fandom stuff or fairly superficial stuff.

Man, that sucks. It really sucks to realize something about a friend that makes you not trust them. Probably wise in your case though.

I went through that with someone for a long time. They were the maintainer of the biggest and most active community for my fandom so I couldn't unfriend them unless I wanted to get blocked there and have her spread stuff about me. It took me 4 years to finally cut all ties to her now that that fandom is dead. She hasn't been able to read any of my really personal stuff for so long that I don't have to worry what she says about me and there's so few people that know me left in that circle that I don't care what anyone thinks.

I usually instantly regret going to tumblr in the first place, so anything else is just piling on the pain.

I have never encountered strangeness of such a level, on Tumblr or otherwise. o_O;

(And I thought it was bad when someone I was following refused to tag the gore they posted, damn.)

That's.... weird. Hope they're trolling.

Not Tumblr, but on Facebook I got a friend request from a classmate I didn't know very well. I accepted, and then she posted a picture of an infected vagina. Now we are no longer Facebook friends.

someone i followed (non citizen of my country) reblogged a cosplay picture which had a few thousand pictures.

It was noticeable because I live in a small town and the location was my local grocery. I even messaged to confirm. I felt very disorientated because real life and internet mixing.

Eh, mostly for me it's usually either I run across an ignorant post about politics on tumblr, or someone taking fandom/rp too seriously.

Re: weird internet happenstances

(Anonymous) 2012-11-25 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I followed this person because of their rp blog and their art was cute. And so I was able to witness how their handle on the character slipped further into crazy ooc territory and then later they started drawing vore and posting it in their sfw blog, because fuck basic internet etiquette I guess. Also a more minor complaint, but they changed their art style to the fugliest thing ever.

I think this is more filed under "it's a small world" but it has to do with the internet and it weirded me out.

My best friend in the fandom at the time lived half the country away. We ran in a pretty tight circle, and she and I started chatting with one of her friends, who she had told her a lot about me. We got along famously for a bit, our conversation wandered to RP, and LARPing that she had done for the first time. She mentioned she rode down with a girl, who had the same name as my roommate's boyfriend's sister. So I jokingly said "Not John's sister, right?" and she got quiet and said "how did you know her brother is named John?"

It turned out that this person I had never talked to before and just met through a friend halfway across the country knew my roommate and her boyfriend and had participated in the same LARP as them just a few weekends prior. It was super weird and really funny after the initial flail of HOW DO YOU KNOW THESE PEOPLE HAVE I ACTUALLY MET YOU BEFORE!?

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-11-25 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
haha, that's awesome! A similar thing happened to me, too. I knew this guy on a runescape forum who lived in the same country as me. Didn't really think much of it and then one day at school I was talking to my friend who had been to a quaker camp thing, and she was talking about this guy who had the same name. I mentioned it on the forum and he asked about my friend and what her name was, and yeah, he was the same guy my friend was talking about. That was like, 5 years ago but I still think it's pretty great. (Mind you, there's only about 2 degrees of separation here.)

Quakers and Quaker stuff are the source of at least 75% of my weird internet coincidences because there aren't actually that many of us.

Re: weird internet happenstances

(Anonymous) 2012-11-25 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
One person I friended on LJ due to similar fandoms ended up being one of the angriest, most bitter people in the world, and their posts were all about all the things and people they hated in their real life. I get venting, but I couldn't live with that level of negativity.

They also wrote a long fic that I liked a lot, stopped for a long time partway through, then finally finished it years later - with an ending that I hate, which confused and blindsided me for coming out of nowhere.

Ugh.
