As awesome as it would be for her to be added to the lineup, she's live action and she was created so long before Disney acquired the company.

I mean tons of fans are throwing a fit over the idea of MERIDA being put into the lineup (although she should totally be there), and lots also threw a fit over Rapunzel (because she's CGI and 'new') and Tiana (also 'new'). >.<

I do want them to make some cool merchandise of her. I demand a 17 inch special edition doll like in the LE line for her. Do it, Disney.

Here's the thing though.

The Disney Princesses, as a merchandise line, only include female characters (who are not always Princesses--Mulan is counted!) from the Disney animated canon lineup. And it doesn't even include characters from the animated canon that are officially Princesses when their movies weren't successful, like Kida from Atlantis and...the Princess whose name I can't even remember from The Black Cauldron.

Unless they have a drastic change in merchandising, Merida would never officially be considered a Disney Princess. That's because the film she was in was made by Pixar, and is considered a Pixar movie first. Yes, the line has been blurred ever since Disney bought Pixar, but the two studios still have generally different management, a different style, a different culture surrounding their films, etc. As I mentioned above, Merida has about as much reasons to be counted (officially) as a Disney Princess as Ella from Ella Enchanted does--she's a Princess, sure, her film was distributed by a Disney-owned company, but she's still not technically in a Disney movie. (There's also the problem with it being a live action movie, since they would have to pay Anne Hathaway for the rights to use her face every time they sold merchandise with Ella--which is why Giselle from Enchanted isn't officially a Disney Princess, although she almost was.)

That doesn't mean you can't consider Merida (or Leia!) a "Disney Princess" if you want to, but technically she still isn't. You've got to remember--the Disney Princess line is a marketing label and scheme first. It's only real purpose is to sell toys to girls. It's not really a special honor to be a Disney Princess, it's just a branding thing. So Merida not being a Disney Princess doesn't mean she's not a good character, or that her movie wasn't good--it just means that she doesn't fit the image of the line due to how Disney has branded it from the beginning.

Actually evidence right now is that she will be brought into the princess line. She's been featured in some group princess merchandise (i.e. a princess doll pack), and when asked about if she was part of the princess line an official rep said "not yet, keep a look out."

Remember that Rapunzel wasn't officially added to the princess line until about a year after her film came out.

Well, I personally really hope they won't. Making Merida all...pink and sparkly...I don't know. I don't think it'd be a good idea, I'd rather Merida merch be kept separate. I guess I'll learn to live with it if they do that, though.

I'll deal with the pink and sparkly as long as it means she continues to be acknowledged by Disney. And they probably won't make her pink (but sparkly, yes). If you're a heroine (Pixar OR Disney), Disney pretty much doesn't market you at all past your film release unless you're part of the princess line or you're Tinkerbell.

There's some Jessie merchandise, but she's part of a separate franchise so...

Basically Merida probably doesn't have much of a chance to continually be marketed and merchandise'd unless she is part of the line. Imo.
brightblueink: Bert from Mary Poppins doing an epic facepalm (Face palm)

The reason why Pixar heroines don't tend to be marketed by Disney isn't because they're not Disney Princesses. It's because there hasn't been any. The only other Pixar film that has a female character you could consider a main character is The Incredibles. (And I recall both the girls for that film and Jesse got merchandise anyway.)

If the film does well, and people continue to express an interest in it, Merida will be around, just like merch for nearly every other Pixar film (besides...Ratatouille, I guess? but that film was never really a super toy-selling one to begin with). I don't personally think that slapping the "Disney Princess" label onto Merida will help. And honestly, despite being a Disney fan, the stuff that the Disney Princess label will zero in on is all the things I did not like about the film, so I'd really, really, really rather they didn't.

Um. I said Pixar and Disney heroines.

If a Disney female is not part of the princess line, they do not get merchandise. Tinkerbell is the only exception to this. Alice will occasionally get stuff, but it's not common.

And actually only a select few Pixar films really still get merchandise (outside of Brave, which is new). Sure WALL-E or whatever might get like, a trading pin from time to time at the parks, but every Pixar movie outside of Toy Story, Cars, Finding Nemo, and to a degree Monsters Inc really haven't gotten merchandise from Disney past their initial release.

I especially want to see where all this Elastigirl merchandise is, because I would love to buy it.

Yes. YES. Add Merida, and I will bathe myself in the tears of the Disney vs. Pixar purists forever. HA HAHAAAA!

I KNOW RIGHT? I FEEL THE SAME.

It was glorious enough seeing the 2D purists throw a fit over Rapunzel. The butthurt here will be even greater.
