I never connected with Amy the way that I connected with Rose, Martha and Donna.

But even though I enjoyed Jenna as Oswin in 7x01, I am trying to manage my hopes and expectations for Clara because I don't trust Moffat with a female character as far as I could throw him.

But I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to like Clara because I want to connect with the companion again in hopes that maybe I'll love the show like I used to.

I feel like when RTD wrote, he identified with the companion or wrote the companion as the everyman. Moffat seems to identify with the Doctor more and tries to humanize him in his writing while isolating the companions. That leaves no character to be the everyman, or audience surrogate or, something like that.

RTD's companions were everymen and I think that RTD identified with his companions and gave them a lot of development. Moffat identifies more with the Doctor- the aloof genius- and it shows in his writing (WHAT HAPPENED TO AMY'S PARENTS?). And that just doesn't really resonate with me as much

Wow. I actually completely forgot her parents ever even existed. And their existence was a pretty big plot point in the Series 5 finale.

I think this pretty much sums up Moffat's characters, period.

And like he COULD have brought her parents back in series 7. But nope. Instead he introduced Rory's father.

This is interesting though because despite RTD focusing more on the companions, his Doctors were still so much more fleshed out than Eleven is. And definitely more consistent.

Well yeah. I think that's because RTD is just a better character writer than Moffat.

And Moffat is a better story writer than Moffat. And I even thought that he was a great one during RTD's era. And I thought I wanted a better story writer too. I was wrong for both. Also, RTD was was better at theme writing.
( Gimme back the characters! D: This Doctor doesn't cheer me up as the last two did and I'm not invested in any of these characters! )

This. I'm still annoyed that Amy and Rory's parents didn't get a single second of screen time or even a passing mention in the Time of Angels. Their only children are gone forever. No other siblings. No grandchildren (although I know that wasn't a biological option, but still there's adoption).

At least Arthur Davill VA'ed that one storyboard scene, but still. D:

Wow, that is a really good observation. I'd never thought of it that way before.

I still greatly prefer Moffat but I guess that means I don't need an everyman.
