I think you may have read way too much into the housing system.

Slytherin was ambition and cunning. It's not a bad thing to be ambitious or cunning, despite the negative connotations of the word "cunning". Replace it with "good at planning how to get what you want" and then walk away with the entire definition of wanting to be successful in life.

Not a sin. Pretty sure everyone wants that, actually.
