I'm actually kind of hoping it's Chibnall. I mean, the guy can't do emotional execution to save his life, but his plots are actually pretty enjoyable.

I enjoyed 42, and The Power of Three, so... maybe? Really, really did not like THE/CB though. I haven't watched Torchwood so I can't comment on it.

For me personally, I've had enough of the flashy plotting with no heart to it. Bring on the character development and emotional continuity.

+10000000000000000 Flashy plots are great every once in a while, and a good plot that also has good character development is the best, but if it's a tossup between the two I'd prefer the emotional continuity and character development every time. Boredom's always preferable to rage.

lol well said. Tbh I'm always somewhat baffled by the good plot argument (in RTD vs. Moffat arguments). I mean, it's Doctor Who. A show in which plastic can be sentient, spaceships made from rocks can fly, aliens only ever land in London, England, and nobody notices the Statue of Liberty marching across New York City. Suspension of disbelief kinda comes with the territory. Where is the line for "irretrievably stupid idea" drawn?

That's the problem with Chibnall though--he writes enjoyable filler episodes, but they've got no meat on their bones. As soon as you try to hand him something more ambitious, you get The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood.

I kind of wish Paul Cornell would come back and be showrunner after Moffat, but of the current crop of regular episode writers, I don't think anyone except maybe Toby Whithouse could handle it.

Paul Cornell... yessss. If only it could come to be...

If not Cornell, Toby Whithouse would probably be the best option.

I mean, I am slightly glad Cornell is not showrunner, or I would be a gibbering wreck of emotions and existential terror every week. But man, it would hurt so good.

Then again, once upon a time we all thought the same thing about Moffat.

Touche! In that case, I hope we'll always be able to speculate about ~what might have been~.
