This, all of it. Especially the first part about Portal being extremely easy to pick up for folk who are not accustomed to gaming, or just getting into the medium. Games are usually advertised as the "bro"s hobby, and the community as being very uninclusive and hostile, so I wouldn't be surprised if the new players included more women than men.

As far as established demographics go, yeah. Women have been gaming for a looooooong time.
