That's not really how it works, though. If box office bombs = no more movie options, there wouldn't be so many shit adaptations* of Stephen King's books. Lots of books get optioned for a movie, which never gets made-- the author still keeps the money. Studios option the movie rights for a lot of books based on the success of the book, the popularity of the author, the similarity of the book to an idea they're developing, etc. etc. Many factors go into it, not just previous box office records.


* Not saying that all of them are bad, but some of them were terrible.
