Just so you know, Slytherins are not necessarily evil and self-serving only. They're also cunning and strive to be their best! I think you were trying to be the best kind of person you could be too. I think Rowling made a house like Slytherin to show that there are all kinds of people in this world and it isn't as simple as categorizing others in terms of good and bad. Look at Peter Pettigrew, he was a Gryffindor and was a fairly poor excuse of a human being.
