valve does a good job of being inclusive, i think, at least in its target audience. like many of their games, the portal series is more or less for everybody, imo. it's a mix of multiple genres and it can either be incredibly simple or abysmally deep, depending on how invested you get in the story behind the series.

i like all sorts of games, but portal 2 is one of my favourites. i like the story behind it, and how valve executes the idea. like i've said before though, a lot of portal fans are wheatley fans more than they are game fans, which might play into the fandom's demographics.

overall i don't really agree or disagree with your assumption, but girls can be - and usually are - just as competitive as guys in gaming. casual gamers are one thing - and like i said, portal can appeal to anybody who likes to game, including casual gamers - since the differences between, say, the sims or tetris and saints row or dead island are rather drastic. but it's not a gender thing in my opinion, it's just a matter of what kind of gamer you are. some games have a more narrow potential audience than the portal series does.

Speaking for myself, I get really competitive with some games, but I do sometimes worry that it's born out of a need to prove myself to be as good as the guys (being of a womanly persuasion as I am). I wonder whether I'd be anywhere near as competitive if it wasn't for that sexism with gaming in the first place.

Bit of a random reply, but your comment made me think. :)
