You're right, war ISN'T something to be taken lightly -- but war is also an irrevocable part of the social fabric, and you have to be able to see it from a cultural perspective -- why we wage war, why we glorify and vilify it (often at the same time) and how it reflects upon and changes us as a society. It's why we have movies in which the Americans singlehandedly liberate France on one end of the spectrum, and Apocalypse Now on the other end. It's not taking war lightly at all -- the grim reality of it is, nobody normal who's not working in the arms industry actually WANTS a war. But war makes for good stories, and that's what we as a society really want. War is just a form of conflict, and conflict is the driving force behind any story.

The thing about Call of Duty is that, technically, the series actually HAS made an effort to portray warfare in a respectable fashion (how successful they are is subjective.) The Modern Warfare series especially likes to display anti-war quotes (and, more interestingly, the staggering cost of many weapons and equipment) every time you die in the single player campaign. Black Ops -- the first one from a couple years ago -- made no bones about the backstabbing, paranoia and grey morality involved in complex, murky conflicts like the Cold War and Vietnam, and Black Ops II, I'm given to understand, is a timely commentary on this new era of remote-control drone warfare.

I guess my point is, it's okay to like a war game or whatever even if you don't like actual war.

I wasn't arguing that it's not okay to like war games. If you'll notice I stated in my first comment that 'I have no problems with people liking them' and, in my second, 'each to their own'. Nowhere have I said 'OMG, HOW DARE ANYONE LIKE THEM!' - just that *I* didn't like them because it felt like it was treating war too lightly to me, on a personal level. And that the game you'd mentioned seemed like it might be one that handled it in a way I'd actually enjoy as a game.

That's it. That's all I was saying. I don't know where you seem to be getting the idea that I'm ripping on other people enjoying them, and I apologize if that's the impression you got. It's not what I intended.

No, no, I know, I think I started rambling and lost track of what I was actually responding to. It happens. I wasn't trying to be hostile or nothin', sorry :(

Oh, no - It's cool. I just know that sometimes I come off way more 'HOW DAR U!' than I intend, and I'd just figured that was what happened. ^^;;
