I personally don't have a problem with it. The sad fact is that a lot of people are far more willing to listen to people "just like them" than the people they look down on. So people who believe that everyone on food stamps are just lazy moochers might be more willing to listen to someone similarly privileged who says, "Hey, living on food stamps isn't easy, no matter how thrifty and 'responsible' you are!" And that the money certainly won't pay for a Cadillac.

Of course it's not "just like being poor", but it can at least give people somewhat of an idea of at least one thing people deal with being poor.
