Doubly because, as the Remus/Tonks death proves, casualties in war are far more likely to be painful and arbitrary, rather than rewards for morality or lack thereof.

Yes, I'm really glad you said this. I didn't realize there was a mindset of people wanting all the annoying ones to be killed off as "punishment". That's not how war works :| and it would have felt so much less real and tragic if none of the innocent good guys had died or had to suffer. It kind of would have missed the whole point.

And I think the writing was on the wall from the very start of the series - that Lily and James died; that Sirius went to Azkaban; that Molly's brothers died... you really get a sense of that whole generation having been decimated and I always assumed it would be the same for these characters we grew up with.
