SKYFALL TALK

[personal profile] themperor 2012-11-29 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, because there was a Skyfall secret. I enjoyed the movie, but when my friends and I were discussing it, one scene stood out to us in a WTF! How did they think this was a good idea scene.

The scene when Bond surprises Severine in the shower naked. He had just figured out she was a sex worker and he thought he would SURPRISE he naked in the shower for sexy times? I really wanted her to just punch him in the face for that, but instead she was like "OK. Cools."

Are we the only people who were totally weirded out by this scene?

Nope! My best friend and I were also extremely unimpressed.

Walked out of the theater with my friend, who is a guy - and that was the first thing we talked about. (And then how M should have gotten to kill Silva in the end. SERIOUSLY WHAT THE HELL). But that scene still stayed with me as the most WTF of the whole movie.

And this movie had fucking trains attacking Bond.

I was, indeed, massively disappointed by M not just not getting to kill her attacker, but also being replaced by a man. Very disappointing.

I shuddered at that scene. It felt incredibly out of place, honestly--the scene in the casino set Bond up as a non-sexual ally, or at least that's how I saw it. Then boom, surprise sex in the shower! With a person who was shown to be very afraid of rejecting a man's advances, so her enthusiastic reaction doesn't really come off as consent.

Honestly, I think it was included because the only other sexual scene was like 10 seconds at the beginning with an unnamed, unseen woman and the shaving scene with Eve, so the director or producers or whoever felt there needed to be something else because it's a ~tradition~. It's certainly not the first time a skeevy, dub-con sex scene has happened in a Bond movie, but it felt really out of place because they've tried to downplay that kind of pandering in the recent films.

Same here. What a huge jump!

Admittedly, I didn't know that was the same lady until I got out of the theater and about two days later for some reason.

Exactly - the woman who played Severine was billed as the Bond girl for the movie so I think they felt it was ~needed~ but it felt forced and actually completely out of character for Bond to have done. Especially since he did come off as her ally in the casino.

But THIS is exactly what it felt like to me it. It felt out of place and just fucking pandering weird.

I thought that was sort of the point? That it's terrible? Bond is genuinely sympathetic towards her, but he's also manipulating her to get what he wants. That's the job. Or at least how he interprets the job.

And you did see him desperate at his shaking hands because he didn't want to shoot her. And then relieved when he misses. Only to have Silva do it instead. Then he's all "business as usual" because he doesn't want to give Silva the satisfaction of seeing him flinch. But, yeah, it establishes that Bond's a pretty suspect guy who does terrible things in his job.

I thought the movie was kinda questioning MI6. They're all shown making questionable decisions and the structure of the organization is revealed as severely flawed. IMO Severine's death was just another way of taunting the audience with what kind of "hero(es)" they're rooting for. The Craig films in general just seem to embrace that kind of moral ambiguity.

I was more weirded out by him not doing more to save her life to be honest. She was really counting on him to help her and he let her die literally seconds before help arrived. He couldn't have jumped the guys before she got shot in the head?

I honestly didn't know if he shot her dead in that scene until the helicopters came. It was such a horrible scene to me. I thought she moved her head and split the drink.

But yeah, I was really just not feeling any of Severine's scenes. I felt like she was there so they could have a Bond girl, and didn't know what to do with her, so they killed her off - and awfully. And Bond just kind of sat there and was like "Eh. Okay." I was super pissed he didn't do more.

Nope. My (male) SO was the first to bring up how weird that scene was, especially since the sex work and abuse began when she was underage.

That scene and, yes, Bond's quip about his hidden radio and backup pretty much right after Severine dies. Same as you, I first thought she moved intentionally and was still alive because of how triumphant the moment was played. It also made more sense to me to read the scene that way because of how much Silvia enjoyed the theatrics and melodrama of manipulating people and events. So Severine would have stood straight with Bond because she trusted him that much, but flinched when Silvia took a shot -- then Silvia would have both enjoyed her reaction and shown Bond that her fear of him dominated her trust in Bond.

...The other, other thing that weirded me out was as soon as Severine's tattoo was shown, my first thought was "WAIT WHICH SAILOR SENSHI IS SHE???"

Agreed that it felt like they were going through the motions of "Bond girl" with her.

That's funny and kind of interesting, because there was an old Sailor Moon website I used to love that did a parody of bad SM sites, one of the no-no's on the site was making up dub names for the Outer Senshi (this was before those seasons were actually dubbed) and the dub name they used for Setsuna/Pluto was... Severine.

And even though the site was supposed to be terrible, I thought "What a pretty name!" So I've always remembered it from there.

Ha, funny! Re-looking at the tattoo on Skyfall's Severine, I think it's a Chinese character that happened to look similar to the symbol for Jupiter in the movie's close-up, causing that brief but vast mental leap.

Severine is a very pretty name :)

Re: SKYFALL TALK

(Anonymous) 2012-11-29 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I was confused by her entire character.

She- I don't even really understand why she was there- aside to give Bond a classic sexy Bond-girl to fuck.

Like, he tries, she...helps? They're on a ship for some reason. Then they're both captured.

I thought she wanted to escape? Why would she take Bond to Silva if she knew there would be people there to capture them? Was it a suicide mission?

That was the weakest part of the film for me. I literally did not understand what was going on.

No I'm with you on it being skeevy as fuck, I actually wanted to yell at the screen 'WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA?!' because really?

I've seen a lot of people mentioning this in the skyfall tag on tumblr and honestly I think people are reading too much into light entertainment.

This, this, omg what the fuck

It's like "ah, you're used to it anyways" and then bam. Come on, and I'm supposed to like this guy? He's our hero?

But yeah, good film, otherwise. First Bond film I actually enjoyed.
