Re: Fandom with the most annoying fanbase?

OMG, yes, Bioware.

I love Dragon Age but the fandom makes me sad because almost all of the female characters are despised.

The thing I like about Dragon Age is that there's a lot of morally ambiguous characters, very few of the villains are totally evil, they're human beings.

The thing that pisses me off about the fandom is the double standard there is between male and female characters. If a male character makes a mistake, is broody/grumpy, or behaves in morally ambiguous manner; the fandom adores them and just goes on about what a great character they are. If a female character does any of those things, she gets bashed and hated to the high heavens.

I feel like I'm one of the ten people in my fandom who love the women of Dragon Age. I am such a fan of Anora, Morrigan, and Velanna; but alas, most of the fandom rejects them as 'bitchs'.

I noticed similar things in the mass effect fandom ie. the female characters get bashed for the craziest things. :(

What? I think you're deluding yourself; the characters in general have a lot of strong opinions.

A lot of people find Alistair whiny, Zevran sleazy, Oghren annoying, Duncan amoral, Eamon a manipulative dick, Cailan an idiot, Fenris emo, Sebastian preachy, Carver ungrateful, and holy shit do so many people hate Anders. I can only think of a few characters, period, who do not have a large group of people who do not like them.

Velanna is a terribly written character, and, I'm sorry, a complete bitch. She's an awful person who's only just shy of being a sociopath. And, in all honesty, Anora and Morrigan are both pretty bitchy. It's their character to be that way. They're GOING to be divisive, because both of them are pretty antagonistic.

Although I like Morrigan just fine, I sorta agree with you here. It's not that the Bioware fandom hates female characters, it's just that they're all quick to jump on any character, period, and criticize them.

That being said I think it probably depends on where you hang out, too. If you go to the male-dominated side of the fandom, I think there's more hate for the guys (particularly the "Fenris is emo" stuff). And on the female side of fandom, you're more likely to see people praise Anders, Varric and Fenris and then have very...mixed reactions to Merrill, Isabella, etc.

DA

That's true. I hang out in very female-dominated areas, and that's where the female characters get the most bashing and the male characters not so much.

The male characters do have some people who don't like them, but it almost all those cases the fans outnumber the hates by a long shot.

With the female characters, specifically, Anora, Morrigan, and Velanna, the haters do outnumber the fans.

My point is, there are grumpy/rude male characters, and they rarely get called out for it, and if they do they're still in the minority. Female characters with the same flaws get bashed for what their male counterparts get away with by comparison.

And I'm sorry, but I don't see how an oppressed woman who's had her race been enslaved, had her culture destroyed, and her land stolen, and her people treated like sub-human for centuries, being hostile towards the race that has tormented her people for years is 'sociopathic'.

You're utterly incorrect that Morrigan haters outnumber the people who love her. Velanna *is* a considerably bad person, and Anora betrays you (twice). Obviously these characters are not going to have a lot of people who love them.

Once again, characters like Anders and Fenris have a MASSIVE group of people who hate them. The only people who generally like them are the women who romance them. You're completely deluding yourself into thinking anything else is the case.

Well, I don't know, anon, it could be her wanton murder of people who've never hurt her or done any wrong by her, and her lack of shit-giving that she murdered them after she found out they were innocent. From the human perspective of things, she's just further evidence the Dalish are dangerous and homicidal. She endangers her clan and her people because she's too much of a psycho to try and uncover where her sister actually went.
