That's about my luck with anything OP. My favorite characters die, any of my ships that even have a chance of being canon get sunk. That's one of the reasons I love AU fanfiction so much.

This is probably the biggest reason I read more fanfic than original fiction these days. I always seem to like the characters who are either out-of-focus or are sympathetic antagonists who, outside of comics, are likely to die redeeming themselves and, within superhero comics*, generally get warped past recognition repeatedly by writers who can't handle the idea of moral ambiguity.

*one of my favourite genres when I can find the right series/writer

I'm not sure if it's unluckiness, so much as you can probably tell in advance who and what won't be romanceable, who will die, etc, and you're drawn to those characters.

Let me guess, in movies you like nice guys and tough girls? I find in the movies I watch they tend to die the most.

Am I wrong? I'm assuming that's very possible since I don't watch movies that often now. What kind of characters do you like?

I totally understand what you mean by liking the non-romanceable PCs the most. I do like the romances but I always do tend to really like those who you can't. DA2 was the worst (Best?) example of this.

It is not the case for me, but God, do I sympathize with you. I don't mind fictional characters' deaths (because I prefer the quality of the work and the idea over all the possible fluffiness and a happy end), but they do depress me and I keep obsessing over them for weeks after the thing actually "happens".

A milder case is various kinds of grief, sorrow and darkness that befall the characters. It leaves me with a bittersweet pain in my chest (and NO, it's not only pleasant, it also hurts).

I wish so badly that one day this rule will be broken for you. I just feel your pain, OP :(

What's about books, though? :)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this is why Pokémon and Hetalia are the only fandoms I've stayed in for more than a couple years. At least in those my favourite characters can't die. Or at least have only an incredibly small chance of doing so.

It seems like my favourite characters drop dead in just about everything else though.

Alpha Protocol. Sis. It feels wrong, but... she's the best character in the whole game.

Same here. It's one of the reasons I love fanfiction so much. Many of my favourite characters are the father figure/mentor/teacher/actual father of the 'hero' and those characters ALWAYS die. It sucks so much because most of the time they're far more interesting characters than the actual 'hero'.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I love it when my favorite characters die and am often disappointed when they don't. I am en emotional masochist.

I feel like there are certain kinds of characters and kinds of ships that get killed more often than others; sometimes there's a good reason for this pattern but sometimes it's annoyingly predictable, especially when it happens to the characters you really like.

omg lol me too. I always try not to have a favourite character because as soon as I choose one they will die. "Lost" taught me well.

That's why I usually go to fanfiction.net; it has all the pairings I could ever need. Now if they can just separate the good stories from the bad ones...

In my first playthrough of DA:O, I wanted to romance Cailan. So I got both at the same time (he is not admittedly my favourite character but I do really like him).

Sometimes it helps when I go in knowing that a character I like isn't going to make it. Just looking at the poster for the new Evangelion movie told me who wasn't going to be in the fourth movie.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-03 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
It can just be a matter of perspective. I tend to catch spoilers for games long before I actually play them, and I'm usually uninterested in characters that I know are gonna practically throw themselves at my character, but when I played a game I knew almost nothing about (I Miss the Sunrise), I was attracted to one particular character long before I realized the game even had romance in it.

(For reference, if anyone's played the game, the character was the space pirate Jessiebelle. Yeah, I know, she's not exactly attractive, but she's charming in her way.)

The favorite character in a movie dying happens to me frequently. It's become a joke among my friends.

Oh, OP. Are you me? I always end up loving the ones you can't romance and/or WILL DIE HORRIBLY. Without fail.

(Generally I also have the luck that they're all fandom buttmonkeys or something, so no ships, either. SOBBU)

Did I post this in my sleep or.

This happens to me with books a lot. I'm convinced my favourite characters will die in every series I read because they keep dying in most of them. (The exception is just one: he almost died but ended up living.)

Happens with TV shows too! In a particularly bullshit way at least once.

(I can actually trace the pattern back to Harry Potter: the only one of my favourites who didn't die was Neville. Although I am happy Remus lasted til near the end of the seventh book!)

I am pretty worried for my favourite in an urban fantasy series I'm reading, especially since not only is he one of my favourites, but he's a sort of mentor to the main character. I thought he'd die in the fourth book and am genuinely surprised he's still alive in the tenth. Happy, but surprised.

Maybe you don't want to get too attached and are picking up on the subtle (and sometimes, not-so-subtle) cues that the character is unavailable... or will be very unavailable soon. Or maybe you are just unlucky. You could look for spoilers on the to find out before hand and guard yourself against it (for games and movies anyway - for tv shows, this would only really work for ones that have already ended).

How is this possible? o_O

Do you just avoid all movies that no one dies in, OP? Because there are a lot of those.
