Sapir Whorf

I am increasingly unconvinced that the strong form of linguistic relativity is true.

Or rather the extent to which it is taken in activist circles.

And it's become an increasingly tired form of language policing rather then allowing for real engagement.

I was under the impression (as someone who is very much an amateur wrt linguistics) that the Sapir-Whorf theory is pretty much entirely discredited?

and I don't think that concerns about the words we use are necessarily founded in a belief in something like Sapir-Whorf or linguistic relativity; I think the justification for it is outside that. Although it's certainly possible, and even likely, that it's taken to an extreme and that it's becoming an "increasingly tired for mof language policing."

As my short research trip to Wikipedia to figure out what you are talking about.

I understood it as something that is basically disproved today? So why would it be discussed?

Also where on earth have you been hiding? I haven't seen you in ages.

I've been around.

Was just pulling a few double shifts with work/volunteer work, and on six days vacation which I'm making the most of to stay with friends up north so haven't really had the chance to have some proper arguments.

Good to be missed though <333

Ah that makes sense. Hope you're having fun on holiday! Oh and btw did the staying up for 24 hours thing work out?

You missed a lot of arguments though! We could have discussed smoking or incest or any of the other wank that have been around these last days.

I worry when I don't see the few regulars I know of.

Yes.

Well enough I did it a couple times that week.

So, vacation was very much looked forward to.

I love Edward Sapir. And I love how that whole Boas circle branched out from the same Boas tree to create all these different fields and theories and hypothesis but started from one dude. Boas, man, he was pretty hot shit.

Given that neither Sapir nor Whorf believed in the strong form of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, only the "weak" one, I think you're in decent company there.

I haven't seen it used in activist circles at all, though. And given the hell I went through at age 12 because I had the word "pervert" and not the word "bisexual," I have to give the general concept some credence.

I think the way it's use in activist circles isn't Sapir-Whorf theory actually, because the theory talks about the limitations of language through expression. As a bilingual, I understand it in the sense that I talk about certain concepts better in one language than the other. For example, it's almost literally impossible for me to talk about my individual problems in Chinese, because I always feel shameful and that I shouldn't, but I have no problems doing that in English whatsoever. It's the cultural context imbued into the language itself that basically 'restricts' linguistic expression. Honestly, the way I've always read the theory is simply that it is easier or more difficult to express yourself about a certain topic within one language compared to another - i.e. it's a theory about bilingualism.

Whereas the way activists use it is the use of singular words and their meanings, which is when it gets incredibly complicated and at the same time horribly simplified because simplification is always necessary when it comes to political activism. It's also within one language and, usually, within one culture and its associated cultural meanings of certain words. I don't disagree with that that - like the anon said above me - but at the same time, I don't think it's Sapir-Whorf at all.
