Just because someone is "cool with gay people" doesn't mean they're not homophobic. I've heard some ridiculously homophobic people be kind and welcoming to gay people (even a woman from the Westboro Baptist Church), while still believing that they're sinning for loving people of the same sex, or voting against gay marriage rights.

uh, okay, sorry, but you shouldn't have voted at ALL in that situation. The vote wasn't for "should marriage be legal in GENERAL", it was "should marriage be legal for this specific group of people". Your (very ~subversive~) vote against marriage "in general" actually helped to suppress a group of people.

My dad is also very anti-marriage. But he didn't vote on the issue, because it was only about marriage as applied to one group of people, not everyone, and he acknowledge that they are two separate issues.

That said, in my state (California) there was a bit of a debate amongst my gay friends on whether or not Prop 8 should pass when it was still up on the table - the idea was to let it intentionally pass, then let it go to the courts, because some of them were convinced the courts would rule gay marriage legal and a court ruling is a lot harder to over turn than propositions and other voted-on laws. I was...less than convinced.

So rather than calling your local congressperson's office or writing a letter or submitting an opinion article to a paper/magazine, you just used your vote to disenfranchise an entire group of people from their human rights instead.

Except, "marriage" wasn't on the polls. Gay marriage was. Your vote had no effect on the legality of marriage as a whole--it just helped disenfranchise a particular group of people. That's a homophobic action, whether you had homophobic intentions or not.

The word is "disfranchise," and it specifically refers to voting rights. The right to vote is the franchise. If you aren't taking away a person's right to vote, then you aren't disfranchising them. THE END.

My dictionary tells me disenfranchise is the primary version, but disfranchise is also correct.

Online Etymology Dictionary tells me disfranchise was the earlier form, dating to the mid-15th century, but disenfranchise has been around since the 1640s.

I can see a difference, actually -- disenfranchise would be to de-enfranchise, reverse having given someone the vote. Someone disfranchised has never been able to vote.

That is a horrible thing to do. Marriage does = equality simply because as it is (in some states) there is a group of people who have certain rights, and a group of people denied those rights. Legalizing same sex marriage makes sure everyone has the same rights. Equality.

If you don't like marriage as a whole that's fine and you can work to get rid of it, but why vote against marriage for some people while doing nothing about marriage for others? You are in fact voting to keep marriage for heterosexual couples only and therefore voting for inequality.

I am so fucking happy that either you don't live in my state, or more intelligent people out numbered you. Because we won the same sex marriage vote and now we are that much closer to being a state with equal rights for all of our citizens.
