Can't sleep so I'm going on a West Wing binge. Any episodes I should definitely watch?

It's kind of hard to pick a single episode, because most of the episodes from the first 4 seasons are great. But I'm going to go with These Crackpots and These Women, definitely. Big Block of Cheese day is so great.

Have you seen the show before or not?

If you haven't...I dunno, I started with What Kind of Day Has It Been/In the Shadow of Two Gunmen I & II and fell irrevocably in love forever, but they're very intense episodes.

If you'd like something light and non-spoilery, for the most entertaining/clever/unpreachy ones, and avoiding the emotionally gutwrenching and emotionally exhausting ones in light of your sleep, you can't beat Celestial Navigation or Five Votes Down from season 1; Galileo, In This White House, or And It's Surely To Their Credit from season 2.

If you'd like really intense or spoilery episodes...well, tell me and I'll rec you a list of my faves.

Five Votes Down is a great introductory episode, yeah. Especially the great Josh storyline in that episode. "The President's a good man. He's got a good heart. He doesn't hold grudges. That's what he pays me to do." Great stuff.

Oh I forgot Celestial Navigation! That's a classic.

Five Votes Down is worth it just for drugged out Bartlet.

Celestial Navigation has everything. Substantial, thoughtful plot and themes? Check. Toby being epic? Check. Sam being adorkable? Check. Josh and CJ being side-splittingly hilarious in totally different, gloriously Josh-ish and CJ-ish ways? Check. Bartlet being ridiculously endearing and entertaining? Check. Edward James Olmos? Check. Leo sticking his nose into everything to lol while everyone else flails all over the place? Check. Merciless deluge of devastating one-liners? Check. It's like a condensation of everything wonderful about the show in a lighthearted package.

OP- oh yes I've seen the whole thing! That's why I'm picking and choosing ones I really like. Already watched Shadow of Gunmen and 17 People.

Ahhh! Well, off the top of my head I lovelovelove 100,000 Airplanes, Stirred, Ways and Means, In Excelsis Deo, Dead Irish Writers, Posse Comitatus, 20 Hours in America I & II, Let Bartlet Be Bartlet, Noel, Bartlet For America, Gone Quiet, Evidence Of Things Not Seen, Arctic Radar, Process Stories, He Shall From Time to Time, and Mr. Willis Of Ohio.

Also Inauguration I & II, Commencement/25, and the string of episodes from 17 people and Two Cathedrals, but I dunno if you want to see those right before going to sleep. The subject material of Inauguration upset me so badly...

"In The Shadow of Two Gunmen", Pts 1 & 2 are probably my favorite episodes, but I have trouble recc'ing them sometimes because you kind of need to know the characters to appreciate their backstory.

"Two Cathedrals", because of the young!Jed flashbacks with young!Ms. Landigham. Both of the actors are perfect, and it's just so sad and powerful.

"Somebody's Going to Emergency, Somebody's Going to Jail" because of Toby's scenes at the WTO protest. Also Agent Mike Casper's first episode, hellooooo, younger!Clark Gregg.

"Bartlet for America" for the chemistry between Leo and Jordan Kendall, and the call back to "A man falls into a hole..."

I'm also a fan of all the episodes surrounding Zoe's kidnapping, but I enjoy angst.

I know fandom's kind of meh on it, but I kind of like "Access" too, because of the CJ insight we get.

"Somebody's Going to Emergency, Somebody's Going to Jail" is a good episode, but I've always hated the Toby storyline from that episode (partly because I disagree with Sorkin's politics on the issue, and partly because I really don't like the way he frames the politics in that storyline - it's absolutely "A bunch of caricatured idiots believed these things and they're obviously wrong").

But I absolutely love the episode for Sam's storyline, and his speech at the end of that episode is one of my favorite moments in the whole damn show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KE05oVdbqw
