Robin, in Robin of Sherwood (aka Robin Hood). I just couldn't believe it.

Silver, in The Silver Metal Lover. Actually, it was after his death that I got gutted.

The Lone Gunmen. I sobbed.

Maes Hughes in Fullmetal Alchemist. I don't care how many times I've watched the episode (either version), or read the manga, Maes.

What happened to Starbuck in the original Battlestar Galactica was pretty heart-wrenching.

The series finale for Sapphire and Steel, and what happened to them.

...you had to bring up The Lone Gunmen.

WWWWHHHHHYYYYYY, WRITERS?
WWWWWWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!?!?!?!?!?
Honestly though I was less upset at their 'death' (no one ever stays dead on the x files) and more upset that they got 'killed off' in such a terrible, terrible episode.

Other deaths, written vaguely to avoid spoilers -
the Algul Siento fight and its aftermath, DT7
the trip to Maine, DT7
"Not Penny's Boat," LOST
The man who hung himself, LOST
"I am a leaf, see how I flo..." Firefly
Sirius Black, HP5
Fred Weasley, HP7

Character distress -
*Anything* involving Susannah in DT6
Certain people's endgame stories, LOST. Especially Claire and Locke.
Starbuck being held prisoner by Cylons, New BSG (why yes, I do have a forced-pregnancy/parenting squick!)
Edward Impaled, Fullmetal Alchemist
Mustang being forced to open the Gate, Fullmetal Alchemist

The winner though would be Frodo and Sam in Mordor. I've read LotR numerous times in the past 15 years, and rereading Mount Doom on the train today I still nearly lost it. I've never been able to get through that series without shedding tears.

> Frodo and Sam in Mordor

A thousand times YES! And later when Frodo says goodbye to Sam and boards the ship to Grey Havens...
