Fictional deaths/distresses

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
So, f!s, what are the characters whose death/pitiful emotional state upsets you the most?

Re: Fictional deaths/distresses

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm right now obsessing over the deaths of McWatt and Kid Sampson from "Catch-22". NOTHING in fiction has upset me like this ever since Sirius Black's death (yeah, it's weird and I'm now pretty indifferent to the poor guy). It was just so gruesome and so fitting in the plot. And nobody was to blame. Well, McWatt was to blame, but it was an accident, after all, and it doesn't make me feel better about his fate. He was such a cool character, and such a great person, and an IreScott, and, and... *sobs*.

Plus I feel very bad for almost every single character of "Murder Rooms" (apart from Cream and a couple of other obvious antagonists).

All of them deaths:
Wash from Firefly
Tara from Buffy
Zack from Bones
Fred from Angel
Sirus and Dobby from Harry Potter
Ianto Jones from Torchwood
Oh and both Grey Jr and McSteamy from Grey's Anatomy, who are the two last fictional deaths to break my heart. Also when Dr Yang breaks down.

There are probably loads more, but I can't think of them right now.

Characters' deaths don't distress me. Other characters' reactions distress me.

Aeryn's reaction to TalynJohn's death in Infinite Possibilities/The Choice kills me. Every. Time. Niagara Falls.

There's another fandom where a particular death has, apparently, sent me off in a snit, but I still think I'll get over it eventually.

Ace and Bell-mere in One Piece. Just...forever sad inside because they died how they died. Happy too, but a fuck-ton of sad.

Ugh, it's kind of embarrassing given the subsequent...everything...in fandom about it, but Coulson's death (or "death") really did get to me. Even beyond him being probably my favorite character going in. Just imagining...how much that hurt, honestly. And how sudden it was. And Clark Gregg managed to get so much genuine fear and pain into his expression as he slides down onto the floor. And then he's there, bleeding all over the place, alone, for a significant amount of time, and he's obviously conscious for it, and then Fury shows up and he still gives his whole status report and tries to put on a brave face about it, but there's a tear track down his cheek, and he can't even finish his sentence. And then he dies. To me it's even more traumatic to me than Wash, because that at least was quick for Wash and they didn't linger over it in the movie itself.

Like, I appreciate the lengths fandom went to handwave it, and that (SPOILERS) he's not actually dead given the TV show, but in a way it's kind of disappointing to me because it lessens the impact of his death if it was just a LMD or something. If I went through all that suffering it should have meant something, dammit.

Firefly - Wash was upsetting in a why Joss whyyyyyy kind of way.

AtS - Fred's death in "A Hole in the World" is possibly the saddest episode of television I have ever seen. And then Wesley's death at the end, with a throw back to that ep, dear god broken.

BtVS - Joyce's death wasn't really upsetting but the character reactions were, if that makes sense.

DW - Donna Noble...while technically not a death I view it as a death of Self and I find it terribly upsetting.

HP - And Fred in HP hit me hard. I wasn't too emotionally invested in those books, I mean I liked them and all, but I was really shocked how much Fred's death hit me. So sad.

Revan's fate after KOTOR upsets me so much if I think about it. I think it was explored in the comics? I've never even read them, but I remember hearing and reading about it and feeling so incredibly depressed (especially after KOTOR2). Just, arg. I headcanon that shit away.

Wash, of course Wash.

Most recently there was a death in Assassin's Creed 3 that I found hard to take. It was just so brilliantly written and SAD. (And no, it's not the one way later in the game. Don't want to spoil people who haven't played it.)

Dom's death in Gears of War 3 was rough. I actually LOVE the scene itself and how it's dealt with, but man did I bawl my eyes out.

Thane and Mordin's from Mass Effect were equally touching too. Why BioWare, why?

Worst death ever for me is probably The Boss from Metal Gear Solid 3. Damn that game for making me cry through the credits.

Let's just say Azula's breakdown in the series finale of A:tLA brought back some very unpleasant memories for me and leave it at that.

Almost every one of the good guy deaths in Harry Potter make me sadface at least a little every time I read/watch them, because I'm a dork like that.

Spoiler for the last book of Jim C. Hines' Princess series, Snow Queen's Shadow:

Snow's death had me bawling my eyes out. It was just so goddamn unfair. No fictional death has ever made me so upset.

Megan Roach's death in Casualty a couple of years ago. That whole episode is designed to emotionally wreck the viewer, and even on second watch knowing exactly what will happen it still suckerpunchs me several times over.

You mean still upsets me after howevermuch time has passed, or did upset me at the time I first heard of their death?

Well, at the moment:

Henry Blake, M*A*S*H. No, I don't care how old and famous it is, it still rips my guts out every time I watch it or think about it too much.

Seymour, Futurama

Fred Weasley, Harry Potter

Sirius Black, Harry Potter

Dobby, Harry Potter

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Marvin Eriksen Sr., How I Met Your Mother

Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Doctor Who

Mrs. Landimgham, The West Wing

Everyone who died in Angel still hurts.

I know there's more I'm forgetting...

The deaths of the carapaces in Homestuck. They tried so hard to keep going even when absolutely everything was crumbling around them, and then just when they were finally starting to be happy again, BAM! Jack Noir'd. It's just so horribly unfair.

Oh, and while it would be very spoilery to go into specifics(why doesn't DW have a spoiler tag?) let me just say I was very distressed by about 90% of the deaths in Dangan Ronpa

Augustus Waters in The Fault In Our Stars. I actually had to put the book down and pull myself together. I think it upsets me so much because although I adore John Green's writing in general, Gus was the first of his characters that I truly fell in love with.

Balthazar in SPN. I'm still not over it, to be honest. Still in denial. He's not dead, he's just lying low.

And the most recent one - I started watching Once Upon A Time recently, and last night I got to the episode where Graham dies. And I am so not okay with this development. D: Pretty sure I can add him to the list of characters whose deaths I am never getting over.

Spoilers about character deaths for Captain America, M*A*S*H, Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto, and His Dark Materials.

Dr Erskine in the Captain America film. He was my most favorite character (next to Steve) and it just . . . augh. All my Erskine feels. Gosh, I wish there was more fic of him pre-film, especially with him and Peggy and Howard.

Henry Blake in M*A*S*H. Doubly so since my head canon for the second-to-last scene in that episode is that Radar has a premonition that something awful is going to happen to Henry but he can't do anything to stop it. Ouch.

Hughes in Full Metal Alchemist and Jiraiya in Naruto are pretty much tied. They were major turning points in their respective series and really surprised me, thus adding to the 'right in the feels' aspect.

Lee Scoresby in His Dark Materials. I very clearly remember crying at this, even more than all the deaths in Harry Potter. And then when Serafina and Iorek find him? Gah. Dang it, Pullman!

Shosanna Dreyfus and Fredrick Zoller in Inglourious Basterds.

It's a beautiful scene, it's their consummation (as even Tarantino has stated it is), and it's the best scene in the entire film.

Still, as much as I love it, it's also heartbreaking. They're just essentially two damaged kids forced into this war and they deserved better. However, in their circumstance, it's the most humane and loving end either of them could have ever had.

In a similar vein, the end for Mr. Orange and Mr. White in Reservoir Dogs gets to me just like Shosanna/Fredrick does. I just kept holding out hope that it was going to end differently for them, even though I knew it realistically couldn't - at least, not in their situation.

Tarantino is very good at making me fall in love with his characters and then hurting me at the end.

Robin, in Robin of Sherwood (aka Robin Hood). I just couldn't believe it.

Silver, in The Silver Metal Lover. Actually, it was after his death that I got gutted.

The Lone Gunmen. I sobbed.

Maes Hughes in Fullmetal Alchemist. I don't care how many times I've watched the episode (either version), or read the manga, Maes.

What happened to Starbuck in the original Battlestar Galactica was pretty heart-wrenching.

The series finale for Sapphire and Steel, and what happened to them.

Captain Jack's first death hit me really hard, although obviously he got better.

Donna Noble. No, I know a version of her survived, but it wasn't the Donna we'd come to know; Doctor-Donna is dead.

An I the only Firefly fan who took Book's death harder than Wash's?

all the emotional distress gets to me because i am a babby whose empathy activates for stories and second-hand informations like a terrible person

Firefly/Serenity: Wash and Book. Wash's was sudden, and Zoe's reactions were gutting (haha) me. Book pissed me off because he was so conveniently shoved away for the whole movie. At least the comic gave him "screentime" and backstory but Boooooook D:

LoZ - Majora's Mask: That little deku scrub you find out was actually the son of the butler deku? And now you're wearing his face?
That game, overall, was so good at consistently making me feel shitty as a kid.

Dexter: Debra Morgan's actress is amazing. The bestest ever. Her breakdown after Lundy oh my god why is she so good and sadness and aaahhhhhp;iguf;lkjuuoiddh

Game of Thrones: Spoilers? In the thread that is basically a giant spoiler warning? [Catelyn at the Red Wedding. already over the edge after all (to her knowledge) her kids were dead or in perma-danger or missing/presumably dead, and now she's all babbly sad :(]

Not Wanted on the Voyage: [Lotte, the unicorns, and Emma being "fixed" for Japeth.] And Mottyl is basically in constant distress mode, so that doesn't help.

Watchmen: Silk Spectre finding out her connection to Comedian.

Adventure Time: Dream of loooooove, are we truly overrrrrr ♫

Breaking Bad: Hank. Parking lot.

Dollhouse: distressed dolls. hit kinda close to home since it's kinda related to why I had to quit studying to be a clinical social worker, or anything to do with kids in pain.

The World of David the Gnome: ending fuuuuuuuuck
