Re: Fictional deaths/distresses
Mostly this may be because a lot of the media I like best, with the characters I like best, seems to be fairly tragic and then have a perfect tragic ending to finish it off. "Rocks fall, everyone dies" seems to be a common theme, as does "Yep, everyone you've ever cared about is dead or has betrayed you and you are utterly alone".
Edit: No wait, just thought of one, and it's... possibly weird. In the Voyager episode "One Small Step", I seriously almost cried at the memorial for John Kelly at the end. And I was at work watching it on my tiny iPod Nano. I didn't even cry at SPOCK'S death scene, but that one got me. It wasn't so much about Kelly's death, though, as what that whole episode was saying about space exploration... and I watched it just about the time that they were decommissioning the space shuttles. Also it left Seven shaken, and I relate to her a little too much.
