I keep mollies and tiger barbs in a 10 gallon. Mollies you have to be careful with though, since they breed rapidly, birth live young, and would eat them alive if you don't move them quickly. Although I have only females so there's no breeding going on.

Tiger barbs and various other types of barbs are fun, too. They're not breeders, but they are social fish. They don't get very big either, and they have lovely patterning.

I would honestly keep an algae eater/plecostamus on its own even without other fish around. I believe they're fine sharing the tank with just about anything, although when they get a little bigger they have a tendency to accidentally uproot plants. (Although I don't think goldfish are healthy for them, but you already don't like goldfish, so.)

I'd second/nth the dwarf frogs thing, though. They're rather interesting, although they don't mix well with some fish.

OMG I loved the tiger barbs we had when I was a youngster. It was like watching a little aquatic wolf pack.
