Re: 10 gallon aquarium
Tiger barbs and various other types of barbs are fun, too. They're not breeders, but they are social fish. They don't get very big either, and they have lovely patterning.
I would honestly keep an algae eater/plecostamus on its own even without other fish around. I believe they're fine sharing the tank with just about anything, although when they get a little bigger they have a tendency to accidentally uproot plants. (Although I don't think goldfish are healthy for them, but you already don't like goldfish, so.)
I'd second/nth the dwarf frogs thing, though. They're rather interesting, although they don't mix well with some fish.
