10 gallon aquarium

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been ages since I had fish, but I saw some at a pet store and wanted to try again. I've got my old tank cleaned and re-outfitted with new equipment, but I don't know what fish to get.

The ones I wanted to get were some mini koi-looking things about 3" long and absolutely beautiful. I figured I could get a couple of those. On investigation, they aren't koi-looking things, they're young koi....that have the potential to grow into the 2' pond variety everyone knows and loves.

Not going to live in a 10G tank.

So now I've spent stupid money on getting new tank equipment, and have a very pretty tank with absolutely nothing living in it. The other fish I've looked at and liked all have a little note on the labels saying they need a minimum tank size of two/three/more times the size of mine. All the ones that might fit in my tank are fugly looking...or boring...or goldfish. (I don't know why I hate goldfish, but I do.)

I'm seriously considering returning as much as I can and giving up. Or just returning the fake plants and seeing about growing live ones, sans fish.

Ouch... do your research next time before spending ANY money, I guess.

You could research about reptiles, and see if a small one can live in there. You can alternatively sell it on the internet, find out if a friend needs/wants it, etc etc etc.

All goldfish? Because the fancy ones suck, but I had 2 feeder goldfish who lasted 5-7 years. They got pretty big, and were very lovely.

African dwarf frogs, maybe? They're unique, at least.

My brother used to have some of these and they were so much fun!

But their food smelled terrible.

I had one as a kid too!

And yeah, frozen brine shrimp is one of the most awful things I have ever smelled. :( At least they don't need food too often, right?

I saw a bunch of these at the mall once and I wanted them but I figured my cats would eat them.

Frogs, turtles, snails, anemones, hermit crabs?

How about shubunkins? Technically they're a variety of goldfish, but they have the pretty, multicoloured spots associated with koi. Or a siamese fighter?

I keep mollies and tiger barbs in a 10 gallon. Mollies you have to be careful with though, since they breed rapidly, birth live young, and would eat them alive if you don't move them quickly. Although I have only females so there's no breeding going on.

Tiger barbs and various other types of barbs are fun, too. They're not breeders, but they are social fish. They don't get very big either, and they have lovely patterning.

I would honestly keep an algae eater/plecostamus on its own even without other fish around. I believe they're fine sharing the tank with just about anything, although when they get a little bigger they have a tendency to accidentally uproot plants. (Although I don't think goldfish are healthy for them, but you already don't like goldfish, so.)

I'd second/nth the dwarf frogs thing, though. They're rather interesting, although they don't mix well with some fish.

OMG I loved the tiger barbs we had when I was a youngster. It was like watching a little aquatic wolf pack.

Female betas. You can put several in a 10 gallon tank, as long as you have hiding places. I would look around for a seller who has betas and willing to sell you a few sisters together to begin with. You must have more then two female betas in a tank together. Female betas will create a pecking order and so you need at least three. Or you could put a single male beta in there by himself.

You could do one of the schooling fish breeds tetras, mollies, danios, barbs, or guppies. They come in a wide range of colors.

I would suggest a couple angelfish. You have to watch what you put in with them though because of their fins. That and Angelfish will eat fish smaller then them.

Ghost shrimp or snails are also an option.
