I've never had my art used in an icon (that I know of), but I have had it used in a sig on Gaia as a background for a little Gaian ID some girl had. I discovered it COMPLETELY BY CHANCE, by the way. Nobody asked me about this, and when I PMed her to say "Hey I kinda drew that and can prove it" (Which she did (politely) ask me to do), she'd said that her friend knew she liked the character, apparently saved the image, and claimed she drew it.

Now, I may be naive and gullible for believing her, but she was really nice about it and also credited me when I said "You can keep it; I'd just appreciate some credit." So I gave her the benefit of the doubt.

WITH THAT SAID.

Just because you found it completely 100% flattering doesn't mean that everyone will. I'll admit it. Sure, I was flattered. But at the same time, it's the principle of the thing, and also that someone not only took my art, but claimed to have been the artist. And that's why I dislike it when people use uncredited fanart in their icons.

Ugh, Gaia signatures. I found someone using a picture of a good friend of mine cosplaying as Ed Elric in their Gaia sig, and she and I had a GOOD LAUGH at that (it's a pic that's made its way all over the internet but that my friend doesn't particularly like). XD I left the person a profile comment and was like "whoa, that's my friend, you might want to PM her to make sure she's cool with this." She let the person keep it just because it was that hilarious. XD But it quite easily could have gone the other way and made her more upset (probably if it was a picture she liked more...).

See, I wouldn't even know where to begin if someone had a picture of me in their sig. :/ I did actually get really pissed at a friend of mine for using pictures of me in his icons, but that was mostly because he told me to basically stfu and lighten up and continued to use them when I asked him to stop.

BUT THAT IS KIND OF ANOTHER STORY.
