Haha, I think it's more that Japan's specific opinions of what is courteous = srs bizness in Japan. Not to mention the fact that everything I've ever heard about the country has brought me to believe that they have bizarre love/hate feelings toward gaijin.

And yaaaah, I really think the only difference between the two are proximity. Fanartists are kids just like us, so them hunting you down and telling you to fuck off isn't too surprising. Authors doing it is just that extra level of wtf.
