I wouldn't worry about that at all. From my experience, Japanese fans are very friendly and welcoming of foreign fans.

good joke

Really? I tried posting my stuff on Pixiv, but I got a pretty cold reception (and I'm hoping it's not because my artwork is terrible -- I've seen objectively worse works by Japanese users get higher ratings and more views). Is there something I could do to be more polite?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Tons of Chinese/Taiwanese artists on pixiv and they seem to do well.

There's some "etiquette" I see non-Japanese artists miss though, like not using 【腐】 in titles for BL stuff.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Would you mind explaining?

The definitions that Google Translate are giving me for that kanji are looking like things I'd definitely feel like a grade-A asshole for using as a synonym for 'gay content'.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaoi_fandom#Fujoshi

Some background here, but basically 腐 is derived from "fujoshi" which is the term for women who like BL generally go by (apparently it's a word pun based on the same phrase for "married woman").

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
wait, do you mean you *should* use that tag? because i have a lot of BL in my bookmarks by Japanese artists that don't have that in the title at all...

and i'm a dude, "fujoshi" would misconstrue the facts quite a bit if I used it as a label on art....

Plenty of Japanese people use DeviantART and Tumblr. Just because a website's community is mainly from one country doesn't mean others shouldn't use it.

One word...

Tumblr

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm confused? Many of the people I follow on Tumblr are from different countries.

No right...to be on an international site...

I'm not following your logic here. Anybody can post there. They have a translation in at least one other language.

Why in the world--invocation intentional--would you think you had no right to be there?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
it's not international site, it's japanese site. even if it's translated into english a bit, a majority of it is still in japanese. and the whole new influx of people lack the courtesy of learning a bit of the language of site they want to use

Probably from the idea that English sites are okay for everyone to jump into, and support diversity of groups, but not so much the other way around?

Idk, but I thought pixiv becoming easily accessible in English would have dissuaded that.

So, non-Westerners are not allowed to like Western art like how a Westerner likes Eastern art? Never mind the fact there are ton of non-Westerners on sites like tumblr.

I don't see how this would be offensive.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Seems like the OP use to be on Tumblr. Plenty of white-guilt lessons get pounded into yer brain on that site.

That's probably why.

I have a pixiv account and it's been pretty nice so far. So don't worry, OP, you're not the only one from W-Fen that posts there.

A bunch of us have accounts to view and favorite Japanese fanart on there.
Not only that, but I've seen Westerners post their stuff of pixiv and also get positive results, so a lot of Japanese fans don't seem to mind!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Can you link to some of their accounts? I'd like to see them!

I love Pixiv, but I don't post anything there. I have no confidence in my ability to do more than fave things...

Japanese fans don't have a problem with non-Japanese users, but they do have a problem with reposting fanart, especially when it gets colored or edited and reposted.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that isn't a concern! My pixiv is intended to be a place where I can put my original content and bookmark stuff I like, not take credit for the work of others.

...why wouldn't you have a right to be there? As long as you learn the etiquette for the site and don't spam English, I don't see why anyone would complain.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
They don't care OP, just like no-one cares on DA when non-english speakers join. Less common sure, but not welcome? Only by a rare few and their opinions are not law.
