Me neither. I follow a couple of ask blogs which are pretty good and funny.

Probably showing my internet illiteracy again, but what's an ask blog?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a blog where someone answers your questions in character. I think it started as a tumblr thing.

It's a blog where people can ask a specific character questions. The answers are usually drawn.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't either. I understand it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but the hate and rage that ask blogs get is ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I've wanted to start one a couple of times, but there are loads in my fandom already and I worry it might bore people. I guess, in the end, it depends on the quality.

Ask blogs are bad? What? Why?

I think it's Sturgeon's Law rearing its ugly head, probably. I think the concept is fine but often either the art isn't that great, or the answers feel OOC for the character.

That being said I'm more used to DWRP so anything that looks like RP on tumblr makes me side-eye a little because I'm a stubborn person that hates change.

I'd like them more if a) they didn't tag the character/pairing name (which I can understand isn't plausible if they want followers, it's just annoying to have to sift through when I'm looking for other things) or b) put in a tag that was like "AskXYZ" so I could blacklist it and not see it when I filtered.

But overall I don't know, they're just so rarely in character (according to my interpretation), and when you start getting into the character/pairing's kids...eh. And all of that would be a "fine, don't read then" situation, except that due to improper tagging, they show up when I tag search for other things, and that annoys me.

Huh? The only ask blogs I've seen get hated on are the crappy, OOC ones. Or the ones who reply slowly, and have impatient fans :|

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I only follow one that I think is really well done. To the point that I got in a serious fight with the character over something I was mad about in the canon.

The only problem there is that the person doing the blog is starting to give the character her own political beliefs (because X character is a "good person" so he could only have said beliefs, natch) which I sincerely doubt are in character.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ask blogs get hate? Huh, I didn't know that. But then I only follow two because the person that runs them has a sense of humour that is right up my alley.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I block most of them and just continue through tags...as far as fandom annoyances go, they're an easy one to deal with.

I like some. I follow several, including pretty much all the ones for my main fandom (there's not many.)

I don't understand it either. I know one or two of the ones I follow have been getting hate lately, and I just don't know why.

I'm not very versed in tumblr stuff, but I think I follow an ask blog and it's pretty funny.

And I saw that epic Thor ask post (I think it was an ask-the-mighty-thor?) where someone said they thought about killing themselves all the time and the response was so beautiful I cried even though I don't know anything about Thor.

So uh, Team Askblogs!

I hate the ones that act like certain slash pairings are canon. As much as I like slash, I want to read how the character acts in canon -- not the ask blogger's fantasies.

I didn't know ask blogs get hate, but then...maybe that's because I've been lucky enough to only run into good ones that everyone liked.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I wouldn't care about them if they'd stay out of the fandom tag. When I'm browsing the fandom tag and more than half of everything being posted is RP or ask blogs, yeah that gets annoying.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing is bad about them, but it is annoying as fuck when they publish ten posts in a row and feel the need to tag them all with the characters' name. Most of these posts are not so interesting that they need to be in the character tag.

[personal profile] gabzillaz 2012-12-06 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I may be biased because ask blogs are spamming one of the tags I check the most, but I really don't like them 99% of the time.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I can't speak for ask blogs that only cover one character or ship, but I help out with a really big one that covers a ton of characters, and we tag our posts by character for the sake of being able to keep the blog organized. We do what we can to avoid spamming the character tags- spreading posts out, not tagging posts with a character unless that character is the focus of the post, etc), but... Well, we're trying to keep an ask blog that covers 40+ characters organized, some of whom are really popular, so sometimes it's inevitable.

We're really really sorry about spamming the tags whenever it ends up happening, and we promise that we won't be upset if you block us because we annoy you. We don't want to annoy you.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
There are people who actively dislike them?

dont...dont follow it then?

Depending on the fandom, it's over-saturation. Whether that be of ask blogs based on a show's character.....or a ton of fucking mary sues.
