That must suck; to only be able to enjoy shipping if your preferred pairing is validated by canon.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I USED to be that way, until one half of my OTP was killed off in canon :'(

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2012-12-05 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, yeah... been there, done that. It's especially sucky if said half of your OTP is killed by the other half.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Sylar/Elle, ftw!

dammit shinji

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Try having it happen THRICE. Once indirectly, but still.
brightblueink: Kyuubey's face. It's terrifyingly cute. (Contract?)

[personal profile] brightblueink 2012-12-06 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
half of my OTP was already dead when they met.

...so the other half turned her into a zombie. :|a

I do enjoy shipping, and frequently multiship, crackship, etc... I just don't do it with as much gusto as I used to.

And while I try to be just grateful for the art/fic (if there even is art/fic), there's just something really refreshing and adrenaline pumping when two characters you love finally come together after all that waiting and UST.

Especially with live action stuff. Fanworks just can't compare.

Also like it was mentioned somewhere down thread, I do have pairings that are validated by canon, but almost all of them either a) unrequited (like with Haruhi/Hikaru), b) break up, c) die, or d) get trapped in a parallel universe or other involuntary separation. The second any of my ships hint at becoming canon I'm like, "Ohhhh no. Oh no no. This can only end in tears."

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not whether you win or you lose, it's how you play the game.

Especially in shipping. There are no winners or losers, everybody and every pairing is a winner as long as the fic/art is good.

WHY DON'T SHIPPERS GET THIS?!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Cause hater's gotta hate and tear down other people.

It's why I don't get heavily invested in fandom and only dip my toe in.

+1000000000000000

I do not understand why shippers try to make it into a competition.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Look at you, using sane logic in fandom! Now get out.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel.

I shipped Haruhi/ Kyoya even though it was totally obvious Haruhi/ Tamaki was the end game.

I shipped them too. And Haruhi/Hikaru. And Haruhi/Mori.

Yeah, she's sort of my fandom bicycle. And, of course, I don't really ship her with Tamaki, though I don't have a great issue with them either, or at least I didn't once it was revealed that Tamaki was such a big idiot that he actually did think his feelings towards her were paternal.

At last you've accepted that your headcanon is almost always wrong, that subtext was never there, and that what it looks like on screen will 99% of the time be what it ends up!

Now your ready to join the rest of us. The ones that don't give a fuck. The crackshippers.

Ship things that will never work! Crossovers! Dead people! Homestuck (Where even if your ship wins, it still loses)! When you know your ship can't ever succeed, the possibilities are as endless as they are fun!
brightblueink: Digimon Emperor: You will bow before me! T.K.: Sorry. The floor's kind of dirty. (Bow before me)

[personal profile] brightblueink 2012-12-05 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, you really shouldn't focus so much on your pairings being canon if it gives you that much trouble. Canon is the "rule" for what actually happened, sure, but there's plenty of place for hypothetical fanwork where your favorite ship gets together instead.

-Signed, a formerly mad Taiora shipper that learned from the Digimon fandom to stop worrying and love the fic

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I actually kind of prefer it when my ship is not in canon or will not be in canon. They can't screw it up that way!
meredith44: Alicia and Kalinda from The Good Wife (TGW Alicia and Kalinda)

[personal profile] meredith44 2012-12-06 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! I dislike when my pairing becomes canon, as rarely have TPTB ever dealt with it well.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
As a slash fan of kids' shows in a homophobic culture, I take the view that I have to read between the lines. Sometimes the writers may want to write a certain pairing, but their hands are tied and they can't make it explicit. Sometimes it's just that my sense of who the characters are, as 3D, nuanced individuals apart from the few situations we see in canon makes it make a lot of sense that they'd be together.

It sounds a little arrogant to say that I think creators are 'wrong' about their own creation, but hey. I don't know, I feel like that's a big part of what fandom is for, developing the possibilities. I'd be thrilled to pieces if any of my ships were a real option for canon, but I enjoy them all the same.

This is partly the reason I don't get into het ships too often (the other reason is that I like subtext far more than the "will-they-won't-they" dance). Still, there was...ONE time I had a het ship...and let's just say that the memory of its end is painful. So, I get how you feel. But, hey, why not embrace the feeling of loving those ships instead of the pain of the loss? Think of, "what if my pairing was canon?" Find fic. The things that made you love the pairings are within the canon, even if they didn't to the conclusion you wanted.

this secret is kind of funny to me because Ouran is pretty the only series in which my OTP actually became canon......

but no, I feel for you OP. :(

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I've ever actively shipped a ship that became canon. I still ship a lot, because I love it and it's fun, but I've pretty much started working on the assumption that if I ship it, it'll never be canon. I've never been wrong. It's still fun though, it's just half the time I end up shipping a rarepair and there ends up being no fanwork, either. =/

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I ship Harry Dresden/John Marcone from Dresden Files even though I can't fucking stand Harry Dresden in the books (nor do I think they will ever become anything even close to amiable). Doesn't stop me from shipping them though!
kamino_neko: Kamino Neko thought a kissy icon was needed. (Smooch)

[personal profile] kamino_neko 2012-12-06 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
<mild hijack>Hey...someone else who hates Dresden...

Granted, I've only just gotten into the series, but barring some significant character growth over the course of the series, I mostly find him to be a self-absorbed chauvinist. (Yet, despite this, I ship him with Murph, who I like a lot, and who deserves way better. Fucking brain.) He'd probably be less unlikeable if Butcher didn't do them 1st person from Harry's POV...</mild hijack>

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Eh I wouldn't let it stop you. I ship tons of things that will never, ever be canon, but that doesn't hamper my enjoyment of it in any way. I don't know what you mean by 'fight' either. I don't see any reason to fight with anyone over your ships, I mean you like it because you like it. I just add a small disclaimer about it being cracky. The nice thing about the internet is you will almost always find at least one other outlier that agrees with you on one of your outlandish shipping preferences. Plus if you're lucky, sometimes your fan activity can attract more like minded people. I would stay away from the whole, "My ship is more canon than your ship" business though. It's a pointless exercise and never ends well, from what I've seen.
