As a slash fan of kids' shows in a homophobic culture, I take the view that I have to read between the lines. Sometimes the writers may want to write a certain pairing, but their hands are tied and they can't make it explicit. Sometimes it's just that my sense of who the characters are, as 3D, nuanced individuals apart from the few situations we see in canon makes it make a lot of sense that they'd be together.

It sounds a little arrogant to say that I think creators are 'wrong' about their own creation, but hey. I don't know, I feel like that's a big part of what fandom is for, developing the possibilities. I'd be thrilled to pieces if any of my ships were a real option for canon, but I enjoy them all the same.
