The Hobbit was a children's book.

The tone of The Hobbit is SUPPOSED to be lighter and more childish than LOTR was. It's appropriate.

I vaguely remember a poster for Labyrinth that had a bunch of goblins all posed close together like the dwarves.

I always thought The Hobbit was for children. Everyone I know who's read the book did so first as a child. I tried to read the book in my early 20s and it was too childish for me. The movie that I grew up with was certainly for small children and this one doesn't look much more mature, tbh.
