If you're not trolling, you should realize that most people in the entertainment industry are going to be Democrats.

What amuses me is that people already telling you to get over yourself and whatnot, but had this been a secret about him supporting a Republican the comments would end up in nearly full on agreement.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Very true, fandom only approves of liberal/Democrat celebs. The ones who actually come out as conservative or Republican are excoriated. What happened to freedom of opinion and speech? It doesn't really impact their acting or singing or whatever it is they did to make you a fan.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Because when you announce your support of a party that vilifies the people you work with on a daily basis, you are kind of a dick for telling everyone they're being mean to you when they get mad.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
literally nothing happened to freedom of speech omfg

freedom of speech protects you from being thrown in jail for your political opinions

if you publicly endorse candidates/policies that hurt people, they get to despise you for it

OP had every right to make this secret, and we have every right to think they are an idiot/bigoted/trolling/choose your own adventure. Just as we would have had every right to agree with a hypothetical reverse secret

This.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really sad how polarized people are when it comes to politics. And with fandom, how often do we see, "Be who you are anon/OP/random person in space! Don't change for someone else's ideal!"? Yet when it goes against the majority of group thought it's sudden belittling, shaming, and outright hatred.

I enjoy many a band, singer, actor who believe far more differently than I do. But when it comes to their work, I put our differing beliefs aside and enjoy.

What ever happened to people knowing what "freedom of speech" actually means? It terrifies me that you might vote.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
funny, i'm not from the usa and yet people here throw the ~freedom of speech~ card to justify their BS too. go figure.

one thing is freedom of speech, and another is freedom to hurt people. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know what you're trying to say there, but FYI in the US you have both, in as much as the government is not allowed to punish you for the things you say unless they are actually threatening in various specific ways.

That's why the KKK can do their thing.

Not sure who's a troll and who's not here, but because it's always worth repeating:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

So unless fandom has spontaneously turned into congress now, nothing has happened to freedom of speech just because certain actors get hated on because of their opinions.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
That is a terrible nightmare.

...Then again, considering what Congress is like now... nah. Fandom would be too distractible.

...Well...

Yes, but the Supreme Court has actually expanded the amendment protections beyond just what Congress does. And what the Court says is just as much law because of the way our system works.

Freedom of speech has never meant freedom from any consequences whatsoever.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-10 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

I firmly believe in "do what you want but be willing to pay for it"/"free to choose but not free from the consequences of your choice." It just seems few people are willing to take responsibility for their words/actions.

Why do people have this idea that Freedom of Speech means they can say whatever they want and everyone else has to shut up, and deal?

The people who disagree with you have Freedom of Speech too. You have the right to state your opinion wherever, and whenever you want. You do not however get to be protected from ever having to hear opposing opinions, especially not when you go to place you know is frequented by a lot of the people who have those opinions.

The funny thing about values is that people tend to favor other people who they feel have good ones.

Yes substantially different beliefs, and people would get a different reaction. Well observed.

Srsly tho, have you seen the modern republican party, you might not have noticed, but they're legitimately fucking crazy and indefensible.
