What.

Why is this a secret? Would you be committing social suicide if you said this in your fandom (and what a fandom that would be! D:) or...?

I suspect that in some fandoms, the OP would be told they were boring.

In some fandoms a lot of the fans don't recognise big chunks of the canon. Vampire Chronicles is like that; nearly everybody seems to have a book after which they disregard the official canon, so quite a bit of fic reflects that.

That said, I've never come across social pressure to actively diverge from the canon, unless you count the fact you'd get less response to fics about late-canon characters who a lot of people either dislike or haven't read about because they'd given up on the books by then.

I understand where the OP's coming from, because it's just always been my way to try and fit my headcanon and what little fic I write into gaps in the existing canon, rather than overwriting canon altogether in places. There's bound to be some fandoms where that's contentious, I guess...
