Yeah, I get that. It's nice to fit the puzzle together, and to ground things.

I agree. The best crack is the crack where it just fits and despite the first impression seems possible.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I often do the same.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2012-12-05 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't everyone try to do that...?

I'm really not seeing the secret here.

Isn't "a story tied with the original canon" exactly what fanfic is? I'm not seeing the secret either.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well that's just being a good writer. I do it too. (and it's more fun that way, trying to get into the original author's head a bit)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
So do I! :)
I just like it when it all fits neatly together.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought most people did...?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not normal? I was under the impression that plausibility was something all true warriors writers strive for, original fic or fan fic.

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-12-05 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I like fics like that too! Nothing wrong with it at all - I really prefer it if a fic has a close connection to canon events or situations. It does depend on the fic and the fandom, but as a general rule of thumb, you're definitely not doing it wrong, OP. :)

what why how

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
What.

Why is this a secret? Would you be committing social suicide if you said this in your fandom (and what a fandom that would be! D:) or...?

[personal profile] mekkio 2012-12-05 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is this a secret? I do the same thing. Most fanfic writers do the same thing.

[personal profile] gamma_orionis 2012-12-05 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree completely. This is the reason I prefer reading and writing about minor characters - whenever I write something with the mains, I find it almost impossible to slot it convincingly into canon.

More fun this way, definitely ^_~
truxillogical: (Default)

[personal profile] truxillogical 2012-12-05 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That's my favorite kind of fic, both to write and to read.

...ask me about my ridiculously huge TF2 fic that tried to fit in all the canon we were given (at the time) and have it all make sense while developing various relationships/friendships.

Or rather, don't.

[personal profile] tasogare_n_hime 2012-12-05 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too OP. I always try to do that if I'm not writing something completely AU.
lunabee34: (Default)

[personal profile] lunabee34 2012-12-05 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
This describes my writing as well. Almost everything I've written in canon compliant (there are a few suggestions).

Absolutely, 100% on the same bus.

Go OP!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP. Me too.

Those who express incredulity at this being somehow abnormal haven't read (or written) in a fandom where everything is AU, where making shit up and then considering fanon as inviolate as canon is de rigueur, and where digging for diamonds in the manure becomes so exhausting that you just give up after a while. I envy your fandoms.

I don't see that there's anything wrong with that. I usually try to do the same thing. Although, since my fandom's canon is sprawling and self-contradictory, you have to excise at least some of it, and where you cut is a judgment call.

But it always makes a story more fun for me, as a writer, if I can say when and where it is. I think people would respect that.

[personal profile] author_by_night 2012-12-06 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
TBH I used to think this was the point of fanfic... I know it's not anymore but I still get confused when people are like "eww too much canon here." I basically only read/write things that could be plausible in canon, with some exceptions - it's not because I'm trying to be an elitist dittohead (as I've been accused), I'm fine with people not going that route, it's just my personal reference.

pantswarrior: Phoenix's stupid hat covers up the fact that he still has lawyerbrains. (naruhobo)

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2012-12-06 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in the same boat. I've gotten reviews saying that some of my fics would be so much better if I just made it an AU and didn't try to fit it in between the cracks of what we see in canon, but I just... can't not try to make it as plausible as possible. When I've tried in the past, I just end up frustrated and thinking I could do this better.

Not to mention, it's so much fun when you suddenly find that ONE LITTLE THING in the canon that causes the epiphany of how something implausible could actually have happened. And then you write it and your readers go "OMG I NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT! D:" I love that.
