That's great, I think a lot of writers strive for this, for some stories, but for some AUs, crossovers, fusions, and prompt fic, it can't really be done. I don't mean that you can't have some canon tie-ins or you can't try to stick as closely to canon backstory as you can, but sometimes there are things that just don't fit. Plus there are the cases where canon contradicts itself and you have to pick and choose.
