(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)Even looking at the replies to this sets my back up - "this is how everyone should write", "that's just being a good writer", "that's the point of doing fanfic" - and I do actually prefer fic strongly grounded in the original text.
No, not EVERYONE should write like that. Some writers do much better when they go somewhat off-canon, others when they go wildly AU. And there are plenty of readers who prefer that. The sandbox is for everybody, we don't all have to be playing the same way, and it's certainly not BEST for fandom if we are. Bonus tip: Anytime you are expressing a belief that "everyone should write like [insert anything at all in here]", you are going to be wrong.
And there is a HELL of a lot more to good writing than slotting a story into canon. Come on. That's just silly. This makes me think of how there are writers who can produce grammatically perfect stories from start to finish, but, you know, "perfect" writing rarely is...interesting. There's more to a good yarn than correct spelling or canon details.
OP, I'm glad you're having fun with your writing, and I hope your fandom appreciates your attention to detail and isn't one of the fandoms where canon fic is ignored, or worse.
