I would suppose this is a secret because there's a lot of fanfic in some fandoms where crazy AUs run wild? For instance, my first online fandom's FF.net section was a sea of cliché mundane high school love stories (it was a series about magic) where one is the nerd and another the jock/cheerleader, or even weirder stuff like mafia AUs and such. Even the ones who were canon-like were wildly OOC or didn't mesh with the canon.
I was one of the ones who wrote the fill-the-gap flashbacks to explain backstories and plotholes, or the introspection vignettes about characters, or the genfic about friendships and families. So, my stuff -and my friends' as well- was all expansion of a canon that its own fandom didn't care much about; as I never got many reviews, I never knew if I was a bad writer or there wasn't an audience. So, I can see why OP might feel lonely and strange if their fandom is anything like that one.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 01:44 am (UTC)(link)I've seen the same with character being back from the dead. Which is also more common in some fandoms than others. Suddenly they're just magically alive. I dunno, say they got shot, you might want to explain how they survived, ended up in hospital or whatever. Especially if the rest of your story is sort of realistic.
I suppose what I see in a lot of fic I read is just wish fulfillment (which is cool) but without any sort of explanation or attempt to tie in in with anything.
