Unless the story is an outright AU, I absolutely try to do this. I thought most people did?

That being said, even in AU I expect characterization that sticks pretty closely to canon.

So much this.

So many people seem to think that just because they're writing an AU it means that they can throw any semblance of in-characterness out the window because it's AU.

I see more anti-AU people claiming this happens than actual AUs that do this. But then again, I've not read every AU out there--I'm sure the awful exists in large enough quantities.

I love it when AUs feel like a realistic parallel universe to canon.
