OP here

I probably have met fans who don't talk about it all the time. However, all of my friends who are Whovians are the obsessive type, and most of the fans on tumblr seem to be too. I just can't find someone who strikes a happy medium: a fan of the show who talks about it sometimes, but who isn't addicted to it.

a fan of the show who talks about it sometimes, but who isn't addicted to it. sounds like me. I only really geek out about Who with other Whovians. Otherwise you couldnt really tell what shows i liked.

I think a lot of people are like that. That pretty much describes me to a T when comes to Who.

But I also think it might be hard to find that in the actual fandom, and maybe a little unfair to expect to. Not everyone in fandom is over-the-top obsessed over it, but I think it's safe to say that most people who are heavily involved in fandom are more invested in their canons than the average fan. I'm a fan of Who, but I'm not really involved in the fandom much.

It sounds like the Whovians you've met IRL take it to a really annoying degree. I don't blather on about my fandoms when I'm not talking to other fans. But on Tumblr, I think a lot of fans probably come across as addicted. I mean, I pretty much use my Tumblr exclusively for posting and reblogging fandom stuff.

If you're looking for Who fans in Who fandom spaces, you will probably encounter mostly people who seem heavily into it because fandom spaces are where they get to get all of their Who-related ya-yas out. They came there to discuss Doctor Who so that's what they're going to want to converse about. Many of them would probably seem less obsessed in another context, so meeting moderate fans is probably something more likely to happen by accident outside of Who fandom.
