I think a lot of people are like that. That pretty much describes me to a T when comes to Who.

But I also think it might be hard to find that in the actual fandom, and maybe a little unfair to expect to. Not everyone in fandom is over-the-top obsessed over it, but I think it's safe to say that most people who are heavily involved in fandom are more invested in their canons than the average fan. I'm a fan of Who, but I'm not really involved in the fandom much.

It sounds like the Whovians you've met IRL take it to a really annoying degree. I don't blather on about my fandoms when I'm not talking to other fans. But on Tumblr, I think a lot of fans probably come across as addicted. I mean, I pretty much use my Tumblr exclusively for posting and reblogging fandom stuff.
