Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2012-11-29/benedict-cumberbatch-to-play-angel-in-star-studded-neil-gaiman-fantasy-neverwhere

"Adapted by Dirk Maggs, who is also co-directing it, and with a cast that includes Christopher Lee, Bernard Cribbins, Anthony Head, Yasmin Paige, David Harewood, Sophie Okonedo, Don Gilet, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Andrew Sachs, the six-parter is scheduled to be broadcast during the early part of 2013."

This sounds awesome and has an amazing cast list, but my first thought was 'how long til the dumb Sherlock crossover fics appear?' I hate that I've started seeing everything through the prism of fandom rather than just enjoying stuff on broadcast.

I was more excited because the cast list Neil Gaiman posted on his site also listed James McAvoy who is one of my favorite actors.

If I had a nickel every time I've seen a Neil Gaiman adaptation planned for television or a movie that never panned out, I'd be a wealthy woman.

This does look pretty legit, though.

What's wrong with crossover fic? Some people like them and they've been around for decades. They're not difficult to avoid. Let the people squee.

I know they're easy to avoid, I'm just grumpy today. Normally I'll squee and let squee with the best of them! (I don't enjoy crossovers mostly because I have been consistently disappointed with them in the past, but I know that's purely subjective).

I'm mostly really surprised with myself that whenever I see a new show/movie my first thoughts are about what the fandom will be like, instead of just enjoying or not on the canon's merits. My fandom goggles are so tight these days and I'm not even active in fandom anymore. :(

Bernard Cribbins, Yasmin Paige, and Sophie Okonedo... my Doctor Who actor senses are tingling...

My first thought there was actually, "Wow, nearly everyone in the cast has been in Doctor Who."

(Well, Sarah Jane Adventures for Yasmin Paige, whatever, same universe...)

Neverwhere has been adapted for TV before, though. I couldn't finish the book, I got to the middle and just gave up out of boredom. :( The only NG adaption I'm interested in is the stopmotion version of The Graveyard Book. (At least I assume it's stopmotion since Henry Selick is working on it)

I think the miniseries actually came before the novel, IIRC. I have no idea how you found Neverwhere boring, but *shrug* different strokes for different folks; not gonna argue with you about it.

I thought your subject said 'Neil Gaiman's Everywhere'. I suck.
