I feel you, OP. I fell in with a truly excellent group of college friends who were all about the Doctor Who in-jokes, and swore up and down that the constant references and attempts to lure me in were so annoying that I would never, ever get into this stupid show. I tried a couple episodes and gave up, since I was surrounded by eager Whovians who wanted to know if I loved it yet and kept reciting all the best lines five seconds ahead of the actors.

...and then eventually I caved, because there were super-casual weekend watchalongs with other people who'd never seen it before, and I figured I'd watch a season or so just to be able to understand some in-jokes. It wasn't until the casual viewings dried up that I realized I had a problem, got all five seasons off an obliging friend, and downed them all in quick succession like hits of crystal meth. And now, to my deep and abiding shame, I am one of Those Who Fans, though admittedly this is a problem with whatever my primary fandom happens to be at the moment.

Not sure what the point of this story is, except possibly that even obnoxious Who fans know exactly how obnoxious Who fans can be. And also that the show is sneaky and capable of grabbing you and wringing your feelings dry even if you don't really want to like it.

(That said, next person to treat me like a poor uncultured slob in need of the Good Word because I haven't watched Buffy or Firefly gets kicked in the teeth. You want to talk obnoxious evangelical fans--)
