That sucks, OP. I totally know what you mean :\ We're not all like that! People should at least have more than one fandom they can reference, if they have to reference fandoms all the time, FFS. Hell, I went all summer and most of the fall without touching DW because I was exploring other stuff, and IMO I like it better when I haven't seen it in a while. Everything's fresh and new and fascinating and you notice all those little unique things! Which is true of any show, I suppose. Those obsessed fans are just...obsessed and weird and they just so happen to be obsessed with Who.

Also, I assure you, by my years of experience with Harry Potter, that in any fandom ever, that contingent of fans - y'know the one, every large geeky fandom has one - are obsessed and obnoxious because of the nature of their personalities, not because of the nature of the show. If they weren't obsessed with Who, they'd be obsessed with something else. It's like they view it as a malicious personal insult if you don't want to watch what they like watching, plus they feel superior at the prospect of "introducing" someone to a new fandom or something.

This is a classic knee-jerk reaction. The more you're told you need to watch/read/listen to something, the less you want to.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That's been my reaction to a LOT of things, OP. Especially Harry Potter, Supernatural, and various animes.

Every fandom I've ever even looked at has been like that, it's just more noticeable with the larger ones because there are more of them to make the rest of us perfectly-capable-of-carrying-on-an-unrelated-conversation fans look insane.

Sorry you keep running into the crazies though, we really aren't all like that*!

* Do not use me as an example. Trust me, it won't end well.

Hey, no fair, only Doctor Who fans are allowed to get sick of Doctor Who fans.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You need to talk to different Whovians. Not all of us are like that. (I'm in so many fandoms that I can't even think of where to start dropping in inside jokes. There's too many)

Not only that, but you should talk to those of us who were forced to be closeted fans of our favorite things for so many years that it's still a habit to keep those things quiet. We tend to be quietly excited about things, and don't shove it in your face, because we've been conditioned not to else we get punched for it. (or mocked incessantly, depending on what high school you went to, or what parents you had)

How do you know that you've never met a Whovian who couldn't bring up the show? I mean, surely, if there was a Who fan who wasn't crazy and didn't bring up the show, you wouldn't necessarily know they were a Who fan, would you?

I'm not really a Dr Who fan myself, but your reasoning is pretty specious, OP.

I've never seen more than like three episodes of doctor who, and I wasn't super impressed. But I've had several good whovian friends for years, and they've never subjected me to constant references or harangues to watch more, just like I don't bug them with homestuck.

Tldr the problem is your obsessive and inconsiderate 'friends', not DW, but I've had stuff ruined for me that way before, and it definitely sucks. 8C

Hi, OP, I'm a Doctor Who fan.

[personal profile] inkmage 2012-12-05 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's have a conversation.

Yesterday I had salmon for dinner. It was delicious. Do you like salmon? The mall near where I live has salmon fish-and-chips, which may be close to sacrilege for some people but I think they're delicious.

I'm writing a novel for my senior project, and I'm worried I won't finish it, but it's a lot of fun nonetheless. I love worldbuilding. Do you like writing, or making any kind of art? What do you like to do? Do you have a career you're really invested in, or a major, or just an area that intrigues you, like I do?

My cat is begging for attention. Do you have any pets?

Since you don't like Who, what shows or books or movies do you like? Why do you like them? I wonder if we have any fandoms or favorites in common.

I kinda get where you are coming from, I got this dude in my class who loves Doctor Who and he just can't shut up about it! I enjoy Doctor Who too, but for Christ sake, try to talk about something else once in a while. This coming from someone who reference shows all the time, 80% of the time people don't realize it though.

..but every fandom ever could be used as an example.

I totally get what you mean. It feels like everything Who-related, especially on Tumblr, has to center on in-jokes and this and that to coerce you to watch the show. Tumblr doesn't see how annoying this can get, and Tumblr doesn't get that you don't need to make constant references, photosets and whatnot to be a Who fan. (I'm not even fond of "Whovian" myself.)

If you hung around me, I'll have a few Doctor Who-related things, but I wouldn't subject you to the show if you had no interest in it.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-05 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I had the misfortune of meeting a Who fan two Halloweens ago. They were wearing a gas mask of some sort and going up to everyone on campus and asking, “Are you my Mommy.” I was extremely uncomfortable when she came right up to my face and asked me this. I don’t understand what she was asking and she treated me like an idiot. From then on she bugged the shit out of me. All her references and noise making (I think it was the theme song?) was really uncalled for. Hey, I’m a fan as much as the next person…just don’t let your life be centered on one fandom/tv show and expect everyone to love you/watch what you watch. As they say…it only takes on fan to ruin the whole fandom for you.

Wait, when you tell them you're not a fan that's when they break out the inside jokes? That makes no sense at all. And how would you know that they're inside jokes?

And how would you know if you've spoken to a Who fan that wasn't all about Who? Because if you have a full conversation and don't bring up the show there's no way to know if they're a fan or not, but there you are having a conversation and you might at that moment be proving yourself wrong!

OP, I used to be much like you. Every Whovian I'd ever met would tell me about OMG TEH DRAMAZ in their fandom, and after a while, I start side-eyeing the whole endeavor as being filled with crazy people and the show looked... well, it looked pretty damn stupid. (Worse than old school Star Trek, which was my gold standard for 'embarrassing thing to be sort of a fan of.')

But then, a good friend of mine whose taste I really respect sent me some DVDs of the new series and I thought, well, OK, I'll try just one and see what happens. And it wasn't so bad, and so I watched another... and another... And now I'm a pretty big fan, although I realize it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Anyway, I don't want you to feel like I'm getting all pushy with you, but I really hope you have an experience similar to mine and meet some reasonable and sane fans who know how not to over-sell something. And if you don't meet those people and never watch the show, hey, that's cool, too.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god yes. DW fans are what makes a generically bad show unbearable.

Ouch. I don't do that, my friend Janet who's way more into DW than me doesn't either, but I do know what you mean. Some fans (in any fandom, not just this one) kinda can't get their heads out of their fandom. And it can totally result in everyone around them getting hype aversion to the thing they most want everyone around them to get into. It sucks for them too! They're really only hurting themselves!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh OP, I'm sorry. That really sucks. I'm a fan of the show, but I can't stand fans who do that, either (from any fandom, actually). Don't feel bad about not watching/not wanting to watch the show c: If you watch it, that's fine, and if you don't, that's fine too. Hopefully pushy fans will stop doing that sort of thing to you, though! It's always annoying as hell.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 02:47 am (UTC)(link)

I'm a Who fan, but most of this past year, with the show mostly on hiatus, my attention has turned to my other fandoms. Practically all I've been talking about is Revenge.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeeeeeaaah, I'm in the same boat. No guys, not everything ever written since 1963 is a Doctor Who reference. Time travel in fiction is not automatically a reference to Doctor Who, it's been a sci-fi plot device since long before the show first game out. I do not care about your in-jokes, they're annoying. I gave the series a fair shot and it wasn't my cup of tea, that doesn't mean I need to keep giving it more shots until it sticks. No, it's okay to not think Matt Smith and David Tennat are the sexiest men alive.

My Whovian friends are worse than my Homestuck friends...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
It's a fun show, the trick is not to take it too seriously. If you start to look at it and think, "that doesn't make any sense..." then the enjoyment starts to fall apart. XD Remember this is also a show aimed at kids in the UK so it isn't going to be like Star Trek or anything. I would start with the 1st season from 2005, that one had the best storyline and script.

Doc Brown will always be my favorite time-traveling hero.

Doctor Who is just a very British version of this with a female companion and an alien instead of an eccentric inventor. Try not to let the fans get to you, this has been a bit of a cultural institution for a number of decades now so naturally you're going to have a few nutters here and there.
