Let's have a conversation.

Yesterday I had salmon for dinner. It was delicious. Do you like salmon? The mall near where I live has salmon fish-and-chips, which may be close to sacrilege for some people but I think they're delicious.

I'm writing a novel for my senior project, and I'm worried I won't finish it, but it's a lot of fun nonetheless. I love worldbuilding. Do you like writing, or making any kind of art? What do you like to do? Do you have a career you're really invested in, or a major, or just an area that intrigues you, like I do?

My cat is begging for attention. Do you have any pets?

Since you don't like Who, what shows or books or movies do you like? Why do you like them? I wonder if we have any fandoms or favorites in common.

Ah, okay. Sorry, I'm a tad paranoid.

Well I watch Sherlock and Supernatural, so I'm involved with the SuperWhoLock group, although I have no involvement in the SPN fandom. But my favorite show is Community :D It's just such an offbeat comedy and it's really different from everything else.

And yeah, I write fanfic, original fic, you name it. I'm writing a novel...well, just because. What's your about?

Pets? I wish. I'm allergic to cats, and we're looking at dogs, but that's not going anywhere...

No problem. :) I kind of did start off wanting to "prove" myself, but luckily you're an interesting person.

I've seen all of the Sherlock episodes that have aired on PBS (we don't get BBC here in the Pacific NW), and I did start watching Supernatural a while ago. I tried to do a marathon from the start of season 1, but I kind of underestimated the amount of "horror" that actually made up the genre tag "action-horror" and scared myself half to death with it. I stopped watching it around the middle of season 2, which I keep regretting because it sounds like such a fascinating show, and then I remind myself of the time I stayed up with the lights on until the sun came up because I'm a total wimp.

I haven't seen or really heard about Community, though. What's it about? What makes it so cool? (Also, please take a moment to appreciate the irony of me asking you to gush about a show you like. But seriously, please do, I want to know why I should watch it because I don't normally go for comedies.)

What fandoms do you write in/for?

My novel's about... like, three different things? It's high fantasy, but also very soft science fiction (mostly because it started as sci fi before I copped out of all my plotholes with magic), and there's a big illness in there somewhere, and some political intrigue, and I promise it's a lot more coherent than it sounds right now. I should probably work on it some more today, actually.

Awwww. I'm sorry for you on behalf of adorable kittens everwhere. That's like being allergic to chocolate, or those little presents you see in storybook Christmas stockings. :(

Random person butting in kinda late but a) salmon fish and chips sounds magical and I will have to see if I can find that somewhere in SF, and b) sadly, the horror aspect of SPN rapidly dwindles after the first two seasons. There's maybe one or two super creepy episodes in the next like five seasons, but nothing that beats the greatness of Bloody Mary/Providence.

I hate horror and get terrified super easily but I will always be just a little sad at the lack of horror in later seasons because for some reason, Bloody Mary is like one of my absolute favorite episodes :D!

I think I got them at a place called Anthony's Fish Bar/Grill or something like that, if that helps.

I know, and that's why I kept wanting to go back to it. But... it was just, it was horror, and then I didn't have the time, and then I had other things to do, and then it was an awful lot to watch, and then whine whine whine but the end result is that I probably will pick it up again eventually, but I have way too much on my plate now.

(I know, right? For a long while I was terrified of my bathroom mirror but it was just so cool.)

Yeah, we don't get BBC either. If you ever plan to watch it again, though, try and watch it on Netflix or get the DVD because PBS took some stuff out to fit the run time. Notably in Scandal, they took out a couple of Mycroft lines, and all the talk about Sherlock's past relationships and drug history.

I honestly couldn't have watched Supernatural even last year, with all the freaky stuff. But since I got more into that are with my writing it's been bothering me less. I'm on S4, and it shifts from more of the paranormal scary to blood and gore scary. Idk if that's better or worse.

So, Community. Basically, Jeff Winger is a lawyer who faked his law degree and got disbarred when people found out. He needs to go back and get a real degree, so he enrolls at a Community college. For whatever reason, he takes a Spanish class, and in that class is an attractive woman whom he fails to hit on. She's struggling with Spanish, so he tells her he's a Spanish tutor and that he has a study group. He thinks he's scored a date with her, but she brings five other people with her to the study group. Over time, the seven of them become friends, and mayhem ensures. They're done an episode with a whole-campus paintball battle, a Pulp Fiction spoof, an Apollo 13 tribute, a claymation episode, a couple of cool Halloween episodes, and a ton of other stuff. It's just really wacky and eccentric and you're never sure what's going to happen next week. It's a bit off-kilter and at times more intelligent than a lot of other comedies, so it doesn't really appeal to a big audience. If you ever start watching it, be prepared to face cancellation every week or so.

I've never written Community fanfic, but I have written for a few video game fandoms and Sherlock. (Ironic, right? I can't write the nuances of Inception but I'm more than comfortable writing dialogue for Sherlock Holmes.) Do you write for any fandoms?

Damn, high fantasy is HARD. I'm jealous that you can actually write it. Plus stuff about illnesses is always cool. Is it an actual disease, or is it a condition (like being a zombie or something)? My book's actually political too! It's a mix of historical fiction, sci-fi, and adventure, and if I tried to explain it it would sound like I took acid and then tried to write a history textbook.

And it's all right. Cats and me don't always get on, anyways. I prefer something that likes to be cuddled :3

My cat is adorable, despite his tendency to want things at three in the morning. He's about five, so he's mellowing out a little, but... sometimes he's clever and sometimes... well, we just laugh at him. He'll do things like run from one end of the house to the other for no apparent reason, and if you don't wear socks he'll attack your feet as you walk around. If you do wear socks he doesn't care. He likes it if you turn on the shower a little and let the water drip, and he'll stick his head under the drips and lap up the water from the tub basin. My cat is weird.

My fandoms are a little strange right now. I'm trying to abstain from fandom stuff so I can focus on my novel, but my presence here is probably a testament to how well that's going. I'm currently into Elementary; Doctor Who (to some extent, I'm not really liking Moffat's storylines); MLP: Friendship is Magic; the Temeraire series; one of the few good YA series, the first book of which is called Croak; I want to read The Diviners by Libba Bray but I haven't had time to devour it; Harry Potter fanfic (is that a thing? I could take or leave the books but some of the fic is just stunning); the musical version of Wicked; TRON (mostly the universe, not the characters); and various other random odds and ends.

What I'm actually writing for is a completely different story - I'm writing (or am supposed to be writing) fics for Inception, TRON (which is a fucking lovely universe to play with, so much detail and structure and just yay), MLP, the Portal universe, several original fics, and an essay for English 101. I'm lumping the last two in because I define "fandom" as "love discussing/obsessing about this piece of media, possibly too much" and, well, they fit. Now, if only I could write my essay on, say, why the Sherlock Holmes in Elementary is more of a complex character than the one in Sherlock, and I'd have it done in an hour.

I am genuinely interested in your thoughts on Elementary's Sherlock character vs Sherlock's Sherlock character. I'm a fan of both shows, but I don't actively compare them. I guess they just feel like apples and oranges to me.

Awesome. Feel free to tldr this, though, because I can ramble when I really get going. ~~I'll leave out which is "better" because that's largely a matter of opinion.~~ I am so, so biased and it is so, so obvious. Also, CBS is Elementary, BBC is Sherlock.

BBC!Sherlock is always right, no doubt about it, if you think he's wrong then you are an awful person and unworthy of respect (Anderson, Sally, etc.). If you are a "good" character, you recognize Sherlock's brilliance and open all doors for him and cater to his every whim (John, Mrs. Hudson, etc.). If you don't fit into one of those two boxes, you are an antagonist (Moriarty, villain of the week). The only two that don't sort neatly are Mycroft and Adler, both of whom are supposedly smarter than Sherlock anyway.

CBS!Sherlock, on the other hand, tends to be wrong sometimes. The best example I can think of is the one in "Child Predator" which as a side note also has the best title ever. Sherlock gets duped, and figures it out. He's not wrong all the time, but he's not perfect either. He's got a more realistic version of cold reading (which is basically all Sherlock Holmes does in the first place), rather than BBC!Sherlock's magical CGI-aided scan thing.

The other major difference between them is how they treat others. BBC!Sherlock tends to act like the world revolves around him, which I suppose is only fair since it basically does. CBS!Sherlock doesn't. The latter, even if he may not like the people he works with, realizes that sometimes he is in fact accountable to them and behaves accordingly (i.e. telling Gregson that he's in rehab, even when it clearly is an uncomfortable and painful subject). BBC!Sherlock treats John like a doormat, and John act like it (getting Sherlock tea or whatever while Sherlock just lays on the couch putting nicotine patches on his arms). In Elementary, on the other hand, this exchange occurs:

Joan (puttering in kitchen): I'm making coffee.
Sherlock: *holds his mug out from the other room, not looking up*
Joan: *rolls her eyes* It'll be here whenever you want it.

She has a spine, and while the loyal-follower thing is a great dynamic, it's a little... black-and-white, especially because a TV show isn't constrained by the need for John to follow Sherlock around and report on everything he does.

Basically CBS!Sherlock is more varied. He has failings, the other characters' lives go on without him, he has reasons for being like he is, he can actually be wrong sometimes. BBC!Sherlock is this cold reptilian demigod to whom characters exist only in relation to how important they are to him. I mean, to some extent that should happen because he's one of the main characters and the story follows him, but to the same extent, the characters should at least seem like real people, and real people's lives don't just stop when the main character wanders out of their field of vision.

I disagree with some minor points but overall I think you make a good point. I think CBS Sherlock is much more human than BBC Sherlock.

I do really like Lucy Liu's Watson though, just for like...not taking so much shit. Though equally I feel like John's a grown man and he can make his own choices as to how he spends his time.

I still love both because they just do completely different things for me. BBC Sherlock is this sort of magnificent bastard who I love to watch. CBS Sherlock is a dude who you feel like could be an actual human.

I'm wondering what would happen is Joan Watson were assigned to BBC Sherlock instead of CBS lol

Hi. I'm sorry, but that's complete and utter bullshit.

I don't mean to say that Elementary!Holmes isn't shown to be wrong (and for it to not be a big deal) more often than BBC!Sherlock — that's true. It's also true that he is more varied, and is more clearly shown as being only one character among a cast that has different lives and storylines in which he is not always a direct factor.

At the same time, I think you're being really disingenuous about BBC!Sherlock? He is quite often shown as making the wrong assumptions — he thinks the passenger of the cab is the murderer in A Study in Pink, he gets completely steamrolled over in the first half of A Scandal In Belgravia (despite the ending, which I despise and will not attempt to defend), he makes mistake upon mistake in The Hounds of Baskerville, and everything spins right out of his control in The Reichenbach Fall. The fact that he doesn't empathize with the victims of crimes is clearly said to be a massive failing, and one that eventually comes back to bite him in the arse.

Anderson and Sally are not shown as awful people unworthy of respect, either; they're shown as people who dislike Sherlock and sometimes act like dicks when he's around, but then he is a dick to them more often then not, something which the narrative doesn't attempt to disguse. Eventually, Sally turning against him in TRF doesn't come out of nowhere, doesn't happen simply because she dislikes him, but is the result of her believing him — because of evidence Moriarty had planted — to have committed crimes and kidnapped children.

As for the old "John caters to Sherlock's every whim" argument, it's really, really superficial, and only upheld by people who conveniently forget that, for instance, John confronts Sherlock quite sternly about his lack of empathy in The Great Game, and an entire conversation between them hinges around the fact that he's disappointed in him because of it. Or that he clearly and completely refuses to give in to him in the opening of THoB, when Sherlock is manic with a need for cigarettes and John shoots him down coolly and plainly. Or that he berates him when Sherlock doesn't act with the compassion and kindness that a man who's been heavily traumatized over the course of several months requires. Or that the Sherlock just lays on the couch putting nicotine patches on his arms scene that you mention happens exactly once, in the very first episode, and the only reason John hastened to his side was because he thought Sherlock was in danger (and that it doesn't happen again, at all, tea or not, so I'm wondering why you assume it to be a regular occurance). Or that he makes it very, very clear that Sherlock drugging him in THoB was wrong, and that Sherlock isn't forgiven for it. Or that when Sherlock appears to care very little about Mrs Hudson in TRF, John instantly and quite furiously calls him out on it.

Come on. There are many criticisms to be aimed at this show, I'm not denying it, but the "John doesn't have a spine and Sherlock is always right" argument is fallacious. I like both of these shows, very much, and the way people tend to glorify the one by bashing the other is ridiculous and annoying; people need to stop inventing flaws about either show the better to support their argument, especially when there are already flaws aplenty to discuss.

Uh... to the extent that I'm procrastinating on a rewrite, yes. (Well, eventually several rewrites.) Mostly it's a fun universe to write in, and I'd probably do it more if I had time, but it's been long enough since I've seen the movie that I don't really trust my handle on the characters any more.

Have you written anything for Inception?

No, I haven't. I'm too intimidated by all the detail that goes into exploring the dream world, plus the pairing I would most prefer to write has been done to Limbo and back.
